Chapter 3 - There must be another way
Is there a way to talk to Siuan?
Which vision felt like it could actually happen?
Moiraine sighed. There had been more visions that would definitely not come true. All those moments when she had been the Amyrlin Seat. Moiraine would never take the seat. She knew that. Her place was beside the Dragon Reborn until Lanfear killed her.
Sometimes, it had been Rand who had killed her, but she knew that wouldn't happen. Deep down, she knew that her killer would be Lanfear, not the sheepherder. What else had she seen?
Surprisingly, all those possible futures came to her that would clearly not happen, like the sweet moment in that small bamboo hut. She had been married to Siuan, casting a net and having all those tattoos on her arms, as it was common for Tairen women. It had been such a wonderful vision, but Moiraine knew it was nothing but a dream. She would never live with Siuan in a small hut, and they would never get married.
And even some of her death visions would never happen. She remembered a scene when she had been in the Ways. Lanfear had been there with the Emond's Fielder, but they had worn black as if they belonged to the Forsaken. It had been strange, but Moiraine's stomach told her that would never happen.
As well as she won't die in Tar Valon. Rand wouldn't return to the White Tower, so there was no need for her to go there.
"Moiraine?" Gently, the uncrowned king of Malkier took the Cairhien woman's hand, squeezing it gently. "Are you still with me?"
Apparently, she had taken too long with her answer. But there were so many possible future scenarios that it was hard to choose. And then, she had to sort out those who would clearly not come true.
A'Lan Mandragoran. I release you from your bond.
Moiraine's stomach twisted painfully. Releasing Lan's bond. As much as she hated the imagination, it would come true. Should she tell Lan about it? Would it help him to finally ask the big question? Would it encourage him to think about a possible future with Nynaeve? Or should she wait until he decided it was time to move on?
"Moiraine?" Lan was still waiting for an answer. "Please. Give me anything. Allow me to help."
The Aes Sedai sighed, then rubbed her eyes with her free hand. Light! She was tired! "I'm trying. But it's hard to remember everything and even harder to put those visions into words."
This time, it was the Malkieri who sighed. "Alright. Then let's talk about those death scenarios. Do you know where you will die?"
Moiraine shook her head. "Not for certain. I was killed in many places."
"Always by the same person?"
Again, the Aes Sedai shook her head. So many people had tried to kill her, not just Lanfear and Rand. But the Daughter of the Night had been the one who had ended Moiraine's life most of the time.
"Do you know when it will happen?"
Moiraine snorted. It would be nice to know how much time she had left. It would make things easier if she could actually prepare for her upcoming death and organize everything that needed to be done.
"I don't know when it will happen."
Relief flooded the bond, but this time, Moiraine didn't understand why. Why was Lan relieved?
"That means... you may die tomorrow or the day after." Lan squeezed Moiraine's hand gently as if he hadn't already had her attention. Was it just her, or did he sound excited? "But it also means your death could happen in a year from now. Perhaps it is still years away."
