Chapter 2 - Get off my Warder
Moiraine is done being separated from her Warder.
Sighing, Moiraine stared at the ceiling of the tent. It felt like hours since Lan had brought her to Bair and Melaine, and the Wise Ones had started helping her. The two women had told her that it would take time until her full strength would return – apparently, she and Rand had been gone for seven days – but she was already feeling a little better. Whatever they had given her, it was working.
Aching, the Cairhien woman rolled to her side. Rand lay beside her on a separate blanket and pillows, but he was sleeping. Carrying her out of Rhuidean, although he had been exhausted, too, had been too much for him.
Egwene had been banned from the tent shortly after Lan had been escorted outside. The young woman had been pissed, but Bair had reminded her what would happen if she decided not to leave. Apparently, Egwene hadn't wished to be dragged out of the tent by the Aiel like the Malkieri.
Lan. Immediately, Moiraine's thoughts returned to her Warder. Although a part of her had wished to have a moment with Rand so they could talk about Rhuidean and what had happened there, Moiraine had been happy to see her Warder. Without his strength, she wouldn't have made it out of Rhuidean.
Her eyes moved to her hand. She had tried not to let go of Lan when Rhuarc and that other male Aiel had appeared, but Moiraine hadn't had the strength to hold on to him. And sadly, her throat had also not played along to say something that would stop the madness.
At least, the Aes Sedai still had her bond. Since she had left Rhuidean, it was back to normal. Lan's feelings were no longer muffled, which was a relief. And right now, that man was filled with a lot of emotions. Especially rage ran through his veins. Moiraine couldn't see what he was doing, but did not doubt he was trying his best to return to her. How long did the Wise Ones intend to keep Lan from her?
Carefully, the woman of the Blue Ajah lifted her head. Bair and Melaine sat on the other side of the tent with their backs to Rand and Moiraine. They were quietly talking while working with some herbs. They obviously didn't wish to disturb Moiraine and Rand's sleep, not knowing that Moiraine couldn't sleep.
Could she risk it to sneak out of the tent? Lan was close by. She could feel it in the bond. Whoever kept him busy didn't care about pushing him further away.
Moiraine's eyes moved to the entrance of the tent, which was now closed. It was the entrance where Rhuarc had dragged her Warder out. It wasn't far away from her position. Sadly, the Cairhien woman wasn't sure how well her legs would obey. They barely had time to recover, and she was certain her strength wasn't fully back yet. Her entire body was aching, and she felt the exhaustion in her bones.
Besides, if Bair or Melaine heard her, they would stop her before she could leave the tent. Bair could easily use the One Power to keep Moiraine in place, and Moiraine wasn't strong enough to fight against her.
Then don't get caught, foolish woman. Lan is out there, fighting against the Aiel to get back inside. You can end this nonsense. All you have to do is step outside.
Again, Moiraine threw a glance at the Wise Ones, but they were still working on their herbs. She wouldn't get a second chance. If she got caught, Bair wouldn't leave her out of sight until she decided Moiraine was doing well again. It could take days before she could leave the tent – or see Lan again.
But Lan's anger was getting worse. Whatever he was trying out there, it wasn't working, and Moiraine feared what the Aiel would be doing to Lan if he didn't stop soon.
