Moiraine tries to figure out what she can do with the Sakarnen.
Anxiously, Lan stood on one of the smaller rocks with his eyes locked on Moiraine. He had no idea what that woman was doing, except that she had embraced the source and was channeling.
He was glad she wasn't pushing him away, but she also didn't tell him much about her time in Rhuidean. All he knew was that Rand went through some kind of glass columns while Moiraine had to go through rings. Apparently, she had seen something, but Lan hadn't been able to get her to tell him what she had seen. Whatever it was, it was bothering her. Her thoughts were racing.
And then, there was that strange white ball. Once Moiraine had been dressed, it had been hard to make her see anything else than that silly object. Lan didn't know where she got it or who gave it to her. But either she had found it in Rhuidean or one of the Wise Ones had given it to her.
Since the Cairhien woman had been gone for seven days, the uncrowned king of Malkier had insisted she would eat and drink properly, but Moiraine barely managed to get anything down. Lan had stopped when he had felt through the bond how her stomach started to twist painfully, refusing to take more food. He would've loved to ask the Wise Ones if it was a normal reaction for someone who had been gone for such a long time. But Moiraine didn't wish to talk to the Wise Ones, and the Malkieri didn't want to leave her side after being separated from her for an entire week.
Of course, the Warder couldn't stop worrying about his Aes Sedai. She had insisted that morning to leave the Aiel camp, wearing the dress she had received from Bair and that strange white ball. It had been a surprise when it hadn't been necessary to convince her to let Lan come with her. The only thing she had asked of him was that he wouldn't stay by her side when she started her channel experiment.
Moiraine had informed Lan that she wanted to find out what that object could do and how powerful it was. But since she didn't know about its purpose, it was safer if Lan wasn't near her. The Malkieri had agreed, yet telling himself that he would intervene as soon as he thought things were going sideways.
It wasn't easy to stay put. The Blue's emotions through the bond changed constantly. At first, it had been a shock when she had started channeling. It had been hard for Lan to keep standing when he had felt how the power had caught her breath. He still had no idea why she hadn't stopped then. Whatever that ball was doing, it was too strong.
But Moiraine wouldn't be Moiraine if that could stop her. Instead, she had kept channeling, and her shock had turned into pure joy. Lan had still no clue what she was seeing, but it was definitely something Moiraine had never seen before. She felt so happy and... euphoric that Lan decided not to interfere. He even allowed himself to relax and sit down.
Sadly, that joy hadn't stayed. Just when he had sat down, something changed again. It was as if the ball was fighting against Moiraine's weaving. The beautiful feeling and the happiness were replaced by hunger – or was it thirst? – and Moiraine was clearly fighting against the object.
What was that? How could it be so powerful that it felt as if it would overwhelm the Aes Sedai? Was there a good reason why it had been hidden inside Avendesora? Was it possible it hadn't been meant to be found again?
A part of Lan wanted to jump to his feet, taking the ball from Moiraine and throwing it as far away as possible, hoping the desert would swallow it for good. It was better to deal with Moiraine's anger than see her collapse.
An Aes Sedai could burn out if she wasn't careful. What would happen if that ball decided to draw on Moiraine's power? Could she burn out from channeling too much into it?
