Thirty Eight

Riley's POV:

Within 4 minutes! Just 4 minutes, she fell asleep. That's her new record. I sigh and walk over to her phone and see Josh on FaceTime smiling at Maya. I smile and say, "Hi Uncle Josh!" He looks over and says, "Oh hey Riley. That was a good history lesson you were teaching." And laughs. I ask him, "So what's up with her anyways?" He sighs and says, "She might be coming down with a cold or something. Hopefully not." I let out a deep breath and say, "Aw no. She can't get sick now." I rub her forehead which makes her twitch her eyebrows and moan and flip over. I sigh and sit next to her. I push her hair out of her face and whisper under my breath, "You poor thing."
For the next few hours I talk to Josh over FaceTime waiting for Maya to wake up. I need to make sure she's okay.
Josh says, "Ugh. Just wake her up its been almost 4 hours!" I say, "Well. To be fair. That only gives her about 6 hours of sleep. BUT I'm bored so yeah I'm waking her." Josh quietly cheers as I turn to her. I start by whispering, "Mayaaaa. Mayaaa." Nothing. I lift up her hand and drop it. Still nothing. I do it again and again till she starts to open her mouth to say something, but closes it again. I say in a louder voice, "Maya." Nothing. I give her face a light pat. Nothing. I pinch her cheek so she stirs around and slaps my hand away. She whines and puts her hand over her eyes. Josh says through the phone, "Maya I know you're awake now." She pulls the blanket over her mouth to hide her smile. I laugh and pull the blanket down. She groans, "Stooooop." And rips it out of my grip. I sigh and say, "Are you feeling better now?" Maya says in a quiet raspy voice, "Nope." She coughs and moves to lay on her stomach. I ask, "Is there anything I can get or do for you?" She says back, "No no no. You take care of me too much. I feel like I haven't been the best bad influence on you lately." And pouts her lips. I put my hand on her back and say, "Oh come on. I can assure you that you've been the worst influence on me." She laughs and says, "Good that's a relief. Im still not convinced though." I walk into the bathroom and find a thermometer and take her temperature. I say, "101.3. Maya you have a fever." I put my hand on her forehead and say, "You're definitely burning up. Do you feel okay?" She shakes her head and says weakly, "I feel kinda dizzy. My head really hurts." I look over at Josh who's giving her a sorrowful look. She says, "Riley you should go I don't want you to catch this." I say, "Don't be silly. I've been around you a lot so I would've caught it by now. I think it's just from the water gun or maybe something you picked up on the plane." Maya starts to look really pale. I say to comfort her, "You're gonna be okay. It'll all blow over." She gives me a slight head nod and closes her eyes. Josh's eyes open wide and says, "Maya?" I shake her. Nothing. I say to Josh, "She just passed out." He gasps and says, "Do something! Put water on her or just do something!" I laugh and say, "Uncle Josh calm down. She's fine! Look, she's already getting her color back. And no way am I gonna put water on her. She's already sick enough." I look over at her and see that she got all her color back and looks a lot better. She turns her head slightly and opens her eyes and looks at me. She asks confused and scared, "What happened?" I say, "It's okay. You just blacked out for a minute. You look a lot better now. You started to get really pale." She sighs and says, "See. I just keep getting weaker and weaker. I'm not as strong as I used to be. LA is breaking me." I laugh and say, "Oh come on. You've just been doing so much here. You wrote your own album! You're going on tour! You'll be back to your old self in no time." She says, "Thanks, but I've just been different. I almost got sick on your birthday. Now I AM sick. Plus my feelings now are all emotional and crappy." She laughs. I say, "You also forgot to say that you took a bullet for me! That's really brave and strong to me. That's better than the old Maya." She smirks and looks back at Josh. She says, "What do you think Josh?" He says, "I think change might be a good thing. You can still be the strong and tough girl you always were, but now you're just more mature and grown up." I say, "Preach!" And we all laugh. I ask, "Well. How bad do you feel now?" She says, "The same." And I check the time.
4:38pm
Then the boys come in with a bottle of cough medicine and say, "We ran out to get this. We figured you'd need it." Maya smiles and thanks them. I pour the correct dosage and give it to Maya. The boys sit on the end of the bed and greet Josh. She throws her hands over her face and sighs loudly. I ask, "What's wrong now?" She says weakly, "I don't know." And closes her eyes and within a few minutes I hear her soft snores again.

What's happening to Maya? Will she get better? I have an idea for some upcoming conflicts for the next chapters ;)
