Eighty Three

Riley's POV:
(Skip ahead 1 month)

Today is the start of Christmas week.
R5 flew out here today because they're gonna be performing their song with Maya in Times Square. But of course, we still have school today. Thankfully it's our last day for these next 2 weeks and it's a half day. Which is good because we still have to drive over there a few hours early to set up and traffic is gonna be hell.
I finish my cereal and then I hear a knock at the door. I open it and am greeted with Maya. I smile and say, "Ready?" She says, "Yup."
Before we walk out, Auggie calls from the table, "MISTLETOE!" I give a confused look and look up and see a mistletoe over mine and Maya's heads. She looks back at me horrified and we both run out screaming.
When we finally get to school Maya says worriedly, "Did he want us to kiss?!" I say nervously, "I don't know and I don't want to."
Farkle and Lucas come up to us and say, "Hey guys!" I say happily, "Hi." Maya says, "Hey huckleberry and freakle." Principal Yancy walks by and stops to say to Maya, "Miss Hart. I heard you're going to be performing tonight. Good luck. I'll be tuning in!" She says friendly, "Yes I am! Thank you." He smiles and pats her shoulder and walks away. She raises her eyebrows and says confused, "Since when does he not hate me?" Lucas laughs and says, "Probably because you're famous now." She shakes her head and says, "I wouldn't say famous. I'd say.. Well known. But not famous. It doesn't sound right." I shrug and say, "Whatever you say weirdo. Let's get to class." We walk into my dads room and sit down in our usual spots. My dad walks in after us and says, "Okay class.
Today we're gonna be talking about change. It's always been going on around us.
In the 1700's the colonists wanted change. Change for the better. They wanted freedom from England.
They fought and fought for their rights they knew they had.
Change is an important part of growth and who we become today. The question is: is it always for the better? There's someone in this room who is a perfect example of change. Maya." She looks up and says, "Sup." My dad says, "Maya do you feel you've changed for the better?" She shrugs and says, "Yeah I guess. I don't really know yet. But what I do know is that I won't need to know this stuff in the future." My dad says, "Oh really? Why's that?" She says, "Because. I know all these lessons apply to our lives at this moment but the history connection you make with it is just useless information. Why do we need to know about Joan of Arc, or the colonists in 17 whatever, or what Belgium did in 1831?" Farkle stands up and says, "Farkle time!" And runs to the front of the class. He flips around my dads teacher plaque so it says Farkle. He says, "You may not realize this now because you're stubborn. But you actually need to learn and grow from history by listening from people's experience in things they felt so strongly about. It can prevent you from making the same mistakes they made, or inspire you to do the same remarkable things they did." She sighs and says with a slight attitude in her tone, "Thank you Freakle. Now let's just get back to the lesson." Lucas says from behind her, "Why do you always call us names?" She says with out turning around, "Shut up Ranger Rick." He says chuckling, "Well okay then." I say to her, "What's up with you?" She says with attitude, "Nothing! Why is everything centered on me right now? It used to be about ALL of us. I'm acting normal and just like usual." My dad says, "Okay kids. Back to the lesson. Change. Secret of life. People CHANGE people. Everything comes back to that, so never forget it. Lesson over. Have a good Christmas everyone see you all in 2 weeks."
