Please, Ben." You looked at the man holding Ben in his arms. The toddler was crying and wailing. In short, he was throwing a fit. You walked up in line behind him. The store was jam packed and the lines were all longer than three people.

"Benny, please," the man said, bouncing the baby while balancing a phone and pushing the cart. The toddler went silent, his eyes on you. The man seemed to realize and turned to notice you. And Benny started wailing again. The man seemed surprised when you reached out for the child, and even more surprised when Ben reached out to you.

"Hi Ben. How are you? Are you hungry?" He whined and stuck a fist in his mouth.

"Oh I see," you said with a smile. You opened your purse and pulled out a teething ring. You quickly wiped it off on your shirt and pressed it lightly to Ben's lips. He stuck his tongue out and then accepted the ring, knawing on it. The man wrapped up his call, still another person ahead of him putting on their groceries.

"Hello."

"Hi," you replied brightly. He glanced at Ben and then you.

"How is he so-"

"I'm one of his daycare supervisors. Where's his mother?" You asked, smiling at the little boy in your arms.

"Actually she uh..." The man scratched the back of his neck, "uh she took off once I finished filming."

"Oh... I'm sorry to hear that." You'd expected it from the moment she started leaving sweet little Benny for all hours that she could, returning with shopping bags and manicures. The line moved and the man started to load his food.

"I'm (Y/N), by the way. Not that Benny can say much of it." You both laughed.

"Chris." Not that you hadn't figured it out yet.

"Nice to meet you." Chris finished loading his groceries onto the belt and watched them move forward. The woman scanned the items and he paid.

"Well I guess I'll be going with Benny then." Chris said, reaching for the toddler, who had fallen asleep to your surprise, although his little feet were still moving a little bit.

"Why don't I put him in your car? Let's not wake the dragon." Chris nodded and took your cart, beginning to load them onto the belt. You began to protest, but he shook his head, quickly. You paid, not allowing him to go that far though he seemed keen to do so. You walked out Chris carrying all the bags and you carrying Benny. His were in recyclable cloth ones and yours were in the store's plastic ones.

Once you'd set Ben in his seat and strapped him in, you closed the door and turned.

"Urm... Awkward thing to say, but I've never taken care of Ben for longer than a few days on my own and I don't know where to start." You smiled. Most first time parents were the same, whether their child be a newborn or several months old.

"Here's my number. Give me a call."

Needless to say he did, though Ben never did learn to say your name as a toddler. He just started calling you mommy.
