You rubbed your eyes when you sat down in your seat. It was in a compartment, two seats for you and two on the other side of a table for someone else. You prayed to whoever would listen that it wasn't a whining child with their parent. Your week had been long enough as it was and you didn't need someone driving you up a wall for the next three days. You were on a three day one stop train from New York City to LA. You would do anything to get away from the city in a mostly discrete way. You watched out the window, sifting through the crowd for a familiar face. Upon seeing none, you put your head down on the table and closed your eyes.

"Hi." You looked up and were met with a man, probably your age. His hair was brown from the ends to about an inch and a half above the roots, where it was growing in blond.

"Hi."

"I'll be sitting across from you for the next few days. My name is Cole." You internally thanked the powers that be. At least they gave you someone handsome to look at while you left the rest of your life behind.

"(Y/N). It's nice to meet you." He sat down and leaned against the window, looking out and waving to someone. You followed his eye-line and found someone waving back. He too had a two toned head, the top red and the bottom brown.

"Friend?"

"Yeah, co-worker really. He's meeting me in LA, but I thought for once I could take a scenic route. Why are you taking the rails?" You brushed some hair out of your eyes and took a mental breath. Might as well tell someone, after all you'd never see this guy again after your three days.

"Trying to leave behind some less than decent people. I'm actually going home. Back to the LA hills."

"Why a train?" You drew your line.

"Don't like flying all that much. You said you're going to work in LA? You're not an actor are you?" Cole shrugged a little bit, with a half smile.

"You got me." You smiled. This was an old conversation starter. You'd lived in LA your whole childhood and the pretense with every new person was that they were famous.

"Are you famous?"

"Depends how old you are." A conductor came buy, checking your tickets before closing the door to your car. The train lurched a few minutes later and you were on your way. By the first meal you got, the two of you had become acquainted. Cole acted in a kids show a long time ago and he had just finished filming a season of a new show soon to come out. You were a girl fresh out of college hoping to escape the people you'd met in New York and go back to your roots in the hills of Hollywood.

"Not that unalike, you and me?" You shook your head, pulling your feet up onto your seat.

"Goodnight, Cole."

"Goodnight, (Y/N)."

By ten o'clock the next morning you realized that Cole was as smart as he was handsome. He liked to write stories and acting was his favorite thing to do, but he had needed a break after being in the lime-light for so many years.

"So, what about you? Your hobbies?"

"What, you mean aside from running to random famous people I've never heard of?" He laughed, but still looked for an answer. Before you could reply there was a banging sound overhead and the air started to chill. It was the dead of winter and apparently the heating had stopped working.

"Shit. I don't have any jackets." You laughed and pulled two jackets out of your bag.

"Too bad. I don't think either of them will fit you." He sighed and started to pull himself into a ball.

"But you are welcome to use one as a blanket." You tossed him the warmer of the two, pulling your own on top of your two sweatshirts. He smiled gratefully and draped it over his legs. A few minutes into the train losing heat, the conductor's voice came over the intercom.

"Sorry for the inconvenience, but the heating has broken in three of the cars. We will be making an additional stop in the next day to get them fixed. For the time being, if you need extra blankets we will be handing them out. Again, sorry for the inconvenience."

You went to bed shivering that night, your knees tucked to your chest, a useless train blanket wrapped around your legs.

You woke up to one side of you being warm and the other side freezing cold. Upon opening your eyes you found Cole leaned against one side, both your blankets tossed over the two of you. When you moved you woke up Cole and he rubbed his eyes, jumping when he realized where he was.

"Sorry! I didn't mean to overstep my bounds or anything, but both of us were shivering and I figured you wouldn't mind being a little warmer." You nodded, rubbing your own eyes.

"I probably would have frozen to death had you not sat over here." Cole didn't make a motion to move and you didn't make one for him to go, so he sat there with his arm around you.

"We get off today, somewhere warmer than the middle of the country."

"You mean the middle of the Rockies," Cole replied. You looked out the window at the greenery flying by.

"Yeah. I mean that." Cole looked at you and smiled, leaning down for just a split second to kiss you. Neither of you said anything after that and you went on with the sitting, looking out the window, looking at your phone, then repeating. Only now Cole was sitting with his arm around you.

By the end of the tracks the heating had been fixed and both of you were perfectly warm, but Cole was still sitting next to you. The train pulled into the LA station at close to eleven pm, both of you stepping off together. Everyone else looked equally weary from the three days, but none of them looked even close to as content as you and Cole did. You walked to the baggage carousel with him, picking up your bag and waiting for his. Both of you walked out and just before the doors into the arrivals hall, Cole stopped you.

"I'm  sorry but-" You cut him off with a kiss and without another word you walked out. Your sister was waiting for you and she hugged you when she saw you.

"Did you have a good ride?"

"Not that exciting."
