"Hey, beautiful." You spun around when you walked in and grinned at Sebastian. He was sitting on the couch with a book in his hand, and he tossed it onto the coffee table, getting to his feet to walk over to you.
"How was your day?" You sighed and hugged him.
"Long as hell. Where's Henry?"
"Napping. We had a fun day of running around in the yard and dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets." You smiled, leaning back to pull Sebastian into a long, warm kiss. You pulled back when you heard a patter of feet upstairs.
"Mommy!" You smiled as your son crawled backwards down the stairs and ran across the foyer into your open arms.
"Hi, baby boy! How was your day with daddy?" You asked, kissing his cheek.
"We played astronauts and detectives outside and then we had dinosaur meat for lunch! I also did addition! One plus one is two!" You walked towards the kitchen, setting Henry down on the counter.
"Well aren't you just a genius? Does my smart boy want a snack?" He nodded and you pulled two apples out of the fridge.
"Seb, can you cut this?" He nodded from where he'd been watching the two of you and found a knife.
"How come daddy gets to do it and I can't?" Henry asked, his nose crunched up and his lips pressed up in a pout. You and Sebastian had affectionaly named the expression the angry duck face, and Henry did it whenever he didn't get what he wanted.
"Because daddy's a big boy," Sebastian replied, "and when you're a big boy you can cut the apples too." He finished cutting them up and put them on a plate, rinsing off the knife and moving it from Henry's reach. You pulled a jar of peanut butter out of the snack cabinet and found a butter knife.
"How about you do this part?" You asked, opening the jar and sticking the knife in the peanut butter. Henry scooted across the counter to where you were and pulled the knife out with clumsy, toddler hands. He managed to get some of the peanut butter on the apples, the rest being on his hands. You and Sebastian smiled when he giggled.
"Mommy, I think you should do it."
"You sure little man?" Henry nodded and Sebastian lifted him off the counter, holding him out over the ground. Henry screamed with laughter as Sebastian carried him far away from his body to go get cleaned up.
When they came back you were sitting and eating the peanut butter-covered apples. Sebastian put Henry in your lap and let him grab the slices and bite into them. You smiled at Henry and then Sebastian, who leaned over and pressed your lips together.
"Ewwwwww!" Henry yelled, effectively splitting up the two of you. You laughed, blowing a raspberry on Henry's cheek.
"You're silly," you laughed, letting him finish his snack.
"How about we go to the park? We can show mommy the trick we learned," Sebastian suggested. Henry nodded profusely, jumping off your lap and sliding around the corner. Sebastian followed.
"I'm just going to change and you guys get in the car." Sebastian kissed you and went to help Henry put on his shoes. You went upstairs, picking up dirty socks in the hall, and into your room. You tossed the socks into the hamper and changed into jeans and a red sweater. You quickly went into the bathroom and when you walked in you saw a diamond necklace on the counter. It wasn't yours. You picked it up, turning it over in your hands. You'd never even seen it before. A stone of anger settled in your stomach and you tucked the necklace in your pocket, knowing you shouldn't mention it around Henry. He hated it when you and Sebastian fought.
"Ready to go?" Sebastian asked as you slid into the passenger's seat. You nodded, glancing back to make sure Henry was strapped in. Sebastian gave you a look at the lack of your smile, but didn't mention it.
Henry unstrapped himself when you got to the park, earning applause from both of you.
"Hey Henry, let's show mommy the trick!"
"Actually, Henry, how about you go to the swing set. I need to talk to daddy for a second." He nodded, running to the wood chips.
"What?" You turned to Sebastian, who looked genuinely confused, and you pulled the necklace out of your pocket.
"What is this?" He went sheet white, his face falling.
"You found that?" The anger in your stomach grew.
"Yeah, who's is it?" It took a second for Sebastian to understand that was happening.
"Oh! No! No, no. That was supposed to be your gift for our anniversary next week. I wanted to look at it before and you came home so I ran downstairs to pretend I wasn't hiding something." You looked skeptical, glancing over at the playground to check on Henry. He was swinging back and forth, giggling with the little boy on the swing next to him.
"I-"
"Here, I have the receipt." Sebastian fished out his wallet and the receipt for the necklace.
"I was hoping you wouldn't see it. Come here." You stepped towards him and he spun you around, taking the necklace to clasp it on. He left a little kiss on you neck and turned you around.
"I promise you're the only girl for me." You smiled and leaned up to kiss him before going to Henry.
"Hey, buddy! You and daddy have to show me your trick." He jumped off the swing and ran to Sebastian, who caught him and lifted him so Henry was standing on his shoulders.
"Wow!" Henry slid down to his dad's back and to the ground.
"Mommy, did you like our trick?"
"I loved it!"
By the time you were done at the park, Henry was dead tired. You fed him pasta for dinner and then wrapped him up in his bed.
"Goodnight, little one." You kissed his head and shut off the light, flicking on his night light. Sebastian was already in bed, playing on his tablet. You fell next to him and he smiled, leaning down to kiss you on the head.
"How about you change and we sleep?"
"I could think of a better pass time."
