Chapter 60: "Have I Got A Surprise For You"
Third Person POV

- - -

Over the first few months of 1996, Scott came to the realization that there was no way that he would be able to stay in the WWF, no matter how much he wanted to. He tried his damnedest to talk to Vince McMahon about a pay raise or just a guaranteed amount of money for each year, but Vince refused to match the offer that WCW had presented to Scott. Now, Vince knew that he was losing a very key player in his company, so he did anything he could to make things worse on Scott at the time.

For example, over the last couple of months of 1995 and into the first few months of 1996, Razor Ramon and Goldust feuded with one another. The feud was a very controversial one, preying on the homophobia of a large portion of the audience at the time. Scott had to give Dustin Runnels credit for his portrayal of Goldust; the latter had to put up with a lot of shit from the fans for the gimmick, and Dustin was very dedicated to it.

There were a few individuals backstage who weren't too fond of Goldust, either, but there weren't many people who had the nerve to shit talk Dusty Rhodes' son.

Razor and Goldust were set to have a Wrestlemania match to cap off their feud, but just a few weeks beforehand, the angle was scrapped by Vince McMahon. Vince, who knew that Scott was on his way out of the company, decided to replace Razor with Roddy Piper. All mentions of Razor were to be dropped until after Wrestlemania.

The way that Vince saw it, Scott didn't even deserve to be on the card. If he was leaving, why should he be on their biggest show of the year?

Meanwhile, things weren't going necessarily bad for Kevin in the WWF. They weren't really going well, but they weren't bad, either. Kevin felt as though he was just spinning his wheels at the time, and it was obvious that he wasn't as invested in what he was doing in the company as he should have been. There had been damn good offers made to Kevin by WCW, but he had yet to make a decision at the time this chapter takes place.

Although Scott has been kept from Wrestlemania, Kevin had been able to participate in it. After Diesel had lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Bret Hart at Survivor Series 1995, he had entered into a feud with The Undertaker. Kevin enjoyed working with Mark Calaway, but alas, his heart wasn't in the feud as it should of been.

Diesel and The Undertaker faced off at Wrestlemania, and although it seemed very likely that Diesel would prevail, The Undertaker came out victorious. At the time, The Undertaker's Wrestlemania streak was in its early stages; later on, Kevin would be glad to be apart of it.

While Scott waited out his remaining days in the WWF and Kevin weighed his options, Jolene cemented herself as a crucial part of WCW's televised programming. At the time, she had thought the best days of her career would be as an announcer and interviewer; after all, she had gotten extremely over for her role, even though she had been teasing something of a heel turn since 1996 began.

As Jolene packed her travel bag at home one evening in late April 1996, she couldn't have expected the wonderful news she was about to receive. The dark-haired woman had been folding some blouses and tucking them away in her suitcase when she heard the phone in her kitchen ringing. Once she picked up the phone and heard a familiar, ecstatic greeting on the other end of the line, Jolene couldn't help but smile.

"Good evening, Dally! What're you up to?"

"Ah, you know, just throwing some shit in some bags and enjoying a nice night at home. What're you doing? I hope I didn't interrupt anything too important!"
