Seeing him wither in pain, I halt when I find a cave. Dismounting Bichen, I carry him inside taking cover against the torrential rains.
Soaked to the core, I find some dried leaves and logs inside the cave, drawing an incantation, I start a fire as Wei continues to shiver. Removing his cloak, I bite my lips at the sight of the wound on his abdomen. Blood gushing out, I am in despair. How do I stop the bleeding? Looking at my outer robes, I realise they're covered in blood.
My inner cloak!
I quickly stand up and proceed to undress, placing the now damp robe near the fire, I remove my inner cloak. I find a part of my clothing which is least damp. Tearing a piece out, I wrap the cloth against the wound. It won't stop the bleeding, but it sure would slow down the pace.
Wei Ying! I scream inwardly, how much more blood would you shed? How much longer would they keep seeking your life? Placing his head on my lap, I wait for the rains to stop.
I am taking you back to Jingshi with me and no one, I mean it, no one can stop me. I close my eyes to concentrate on transferring my spiritual energy to you. Come back to me. Please.
A small whimper causes me to open my eyes and watching you squint, makes my heart melt "Wei Ying" I whisper softly. You're small pale smile, let's me know, that you'll be alright.
"Lan Zhan" he cups my face "you carrying me on your back, reminds me of the past. Didn't I carry you too?" He grins and I sigh "Hm". Nodding he smiles "those were indeed good days" look around he chuckles softly "weren't we stuck like this in Muaxi Mountain?"
"Hm" don't talk too much, conserve your energy my Wei Ying.
"Only at that time" he grins again "you were reluctant to remove your robes" he looks at my chest and I close his eyes "Shameless" his laughter is weak and then be sighs "Lan Zhan, I am feeling sleepy, wake me up soon, alright?" His body goes limp and I clutch him towards me.
"Hm" I'll always be there to catch you. Hearing to the sounds of the rains receding, I quickly don my robe, gently lifting him in my arms, I mount Bichen again and we leave for Jingshi.
Observing that there aren't any disciples at the gate of Cloud Recess, I instantly knew, my brother is giving me a free passage to enter Gusu. Striding towards Jingshi, I open the doors and place Wei Ying on the futon.
"How is he?" My brother walks in and places a palate of medicines, checking his pulse, brother's face looks a bit relaxed "it's not grevious". Opening Wei Ying's robes, he removes the piece of cloth that I had tied around his abdomen. If he notices my lack of attire, my brother does not comment.
Walking away, I bring a bucket of fresh warm water and start wiping the grim and dirt from Wei's body as brother goes about to mix a concoction. As I wipe his arm down, I notice the deep lone gash on his left arm.
The sacrifice ritual.
Brother's gaze finds mine, but for now he does not propagate the matter. He waits for me to clean Wei Ying and then passes on the medicines towards to me "Here, apply them directly on his wounds and tie a fresh muslin cloth. Wait overnight and then by tomorrow morning, he should be alright" he does not meet my eyes and walks out of my chamber.
Gently applying the medicine, I pack them as instructed. From my wardrobe, I pick out a white inner robe of mine which is soft and thin, covering his body with it, I pick him in my arms and walk towards my bed. Placing him there, I cover him with my soft blanket.
Knowing my brother is waiting for me outside, I burn the calming oil for him and leave him inside the safety of my abode.
As expected, my brother is waiting for me and on his lap is one of my rabbit. Caressing his fur, my brother looks at the vast expanse of Gusu's mountains and sighs softly "Wangji" the pain in his voice is immeasurable "what happened today, how are we going to explain everything to uncle?"
"I am sorry for what happened to Madam Jin" I look at my brother "but I won't apologise further. My Wei Ying is lying inside bleeding and unconscious. They have always sought his life but not anymore. What happened today, I know would not be the last time, but like today, I will choose him". The conviction in my voice has my brother sigh again.
"I understand Wangji. You know I have always understood what your heart wants. But" he shakes his head "don't bother further. Just take care of Young Master Wei Wuxian. I must warn you though, as of now you both are fugitives. All the sects are in search of you two. No one would dare to enter Gusu but" he looks behind me "it's best if you could stay hidden here for few days, in the meanwhile Young Master Wei Wuxian's health would improve too".
"Hm" I reply as I look into my brother's eyes. He has always been there for me. Today, he has subtly proven his loyalty, though he need not have. He has indeed chosen sides. He has chosen me. He chose me over the clan.
"Brother" I whisper softly "I know I can never repay the debt I owe you, but know this, I will never abandon you. Not even for Wei Ying" his gasp is subtle and with a soft smile he clasps my hand in his "Wangji, what you have here, in your heart, never give it up".
That night we sit in silence. Admiring the cold beautiful night that was familiar to both of us. A vow we made as kids to be by eachothers side, was a vow to be held till the end of time.
