The deal.
Jayden was out of town this week, he had a football tournament in Quebec.
After everything that's happened, I needed to talk with Beth alone. Some things needed to be put in order.
Jayden left for his road trip last night. This afternoon, I walked to his house and rang the doorbell instead of using my key to the side door.
Beth opened the door and confusion took over her emotions.
"Madison didn't Jayden tell you he was leaving last night?"
"Yes... I'm actually here to see you." I replied.
She welcomed me into the house and she lead me to her study. She sat in her huge leather chair behind her desk while I sat in front of her on a regular 'waiting room type chair.'
She did not make small talk she just asked me straight up, what did I want to see her for.
Now that I was present in front of Beth, I no longer wanted to discuss such a touchy subject.
I pushed myself to. It needed to be done.
"Do you miss him, Beth?"
"Miss him? Maddie, he will be back this weekend." She laughed at me.
I wasn't talking about Jayden. "Do you miss your husband?" I said in a quieter tone.
She was taken back at the topic of my conversation. "What is it that you would like to speak with me about?"
She asked again.
"I know it is not my place but I wanted to have this discussion with you. Only you."
"Madison you are equally apart of this family so you don't have to be worried about my reactions. I am only tough on Jay because he is almost identical to him." She said with a sigh.
It was hard for her to talk about such topics with Jayden because it was like talking to a mini version of William.
"I know why I am never allowed to come over the first week of March." I blurted out.
"And why might that be?"
I let out a deep breath and explained, "It's the week he never came back. You got on that flight years ago and you never heard from him again. Beth, you are always so strong and I know that everybody's got a dark side. You drink yourself wasted through the night and try to hide the evidence. I only noticed it last year but I never knew the reason. You are hurting and don't want to remember those times. That's why I'm here."
Beth let out a small gasp, "You got me." She continuously ran her hands through her blonde locks. She reached towards her drawer and pulled out a book.
I caught a glimpse of the title and author, We are not ourselves...Mathew Thomas.
Beth opened the book and pulled out a bright yellow key.
"Do you know what this belongs to." She broke the silence that was overflowing in the room.
I shook my head.
Her greyish brown eyes lead my own brown eyes to a chest on her shelf.
She told me to go get it. When she opened the chest there was only a small note. The note would lead someone to find another key. That key was to unlock Beth's bedroom door. Afterwards, they would have to look for another book,
Brave Enough: Getting Over Our Fears, Flaws, and Failures to Live Bold and Free...Nicole Unice.
Just to find another key that opens, a specific photo album. Located in that album was a letter. For Jayden.
From William, after he abandoned his family.
"Why did you tell me this Beth?" I questioned her.
She told me that if anything bad ever happened to her during the month of March she would want me to direct Jayden through those steps.
I never really understood it but I agreed.
Beth told me that she would give anything just to hear William's voice again.
I started chewing on the inside of my cheek. Beth noticed and questioned me.
"Madison what do you know that I don't?" She read my face like a book.
I was keeping this from her. I thought she knew but it was clear that she didn't.
"Kaitlyn told me that she met you through your husband."
"And?" She pressed.
"Beth, have you ever asked Kaitlyn if she had any contact with William?" I asked her.
She looked upset at first but then she understood. Kaitlyn had William's phone number the whole time.
"No, I never once thought of asking. I don't think I would want to, it's been so long." She talked to herself out loud.
"Beth I came here to make a deal..." I whispered ashamed of the next words I was going to say.
Beth raised her eyebrow, wanting me to continue talking.
I looked everywhere else other than Beth. I couldn't look her in the eye saying this.
"You've told me in the past that if I hurt Jayden you don't know if you could forgive me. If Jayden hurt me you probably wouldn't forgive him either. Jay and I fight a lot, and the break between us after each fight is longer than the last. I want you to promise me if for some reason I am done with Jayden or he is done with me. That you get that number and call him. Jayden needs his dad more than ever. And I know that in a couple of years I won't be involved with the Morgan family anymore. I need you to promise that you'll bring his dad back. If I am not there I know Jay would be a wreck. He needs someone to lean on you can't always be there Beth. You've told me that before, it takes two. You and William. I'm not meant to stay in his life forever."
I finished my proposal, I guess it came out more as a plead if anything.
"Madison look at me," Beth whispered. She looked defeated when I forced my gaze at her.
She proceeded with her reply. Without an ounce of doubt, she said. "If you believe what you said Maddie, I'll trust you because it takes two. I promise if you're not there I'll do anything in my power to get William back."
