That Damned Hashtag

The past few days have been rough on Taylor, the misogynistic joke that was made on Ginny & Georgia. She'd had enough of that stupid joke so she'd spoken out about it. Much to her dismay, that had caused a huge amount of backlash, people calling her racist and a white feminist, so on and so forth. That alone had cause upset in Taylor, she doesn't quite know what to do right now. She's felt so overwhelmed, she's been trying her best to not let it get to her but deep down she just feels awful.

Taylor wakes up, hoping that today will be the day things improve to some extent. She can see the sunlight through the cracks in the blind and prays that that's a good sign. She sighs, stretching her arms above her head. A small smile plays on her face as she looks over at the sleeping man beside her. He's been so sweet this week, as he always it. She has no idea how she'd cope with things like this without him there to just hold her. She lets out a small sigh before climbing out of bed to begin with her day. Unfortunately when things like this go down online, there's a lot of PR to be sorted out. Taylor makes her way downstairs for coffee before settling down on the couch and looking through her phone quickly. She sees a few missed calls from Tree and decides to call her back.

"Hey Taylor."

"Hi Tree, what's up? Have you heard something from the writers of Ginny & Georgia?" She's hopeful that maybe they've agreed to apologise or something.

"Unfortunately not, this isn't about that right now. Something else has happened." Taylor feels her heart sink, what else could've possibly gone wrong?

"So Twitter's going a bit wild at the moment. A few viral hate tweets have dragged up a few things from your past and now the same hashtag from 2016 is trending again." Taylor brings her hand up to her mouth,

"What kinds of things are they dragging up?" She asks hesitantly, unsure if she really wants the answer.

"Uh, well they're really leaning into the whole racist thing. They're accusing you of cultural appropriation because of that SNL skit you did over 10 years ago and the way you got dressed up in Japan. They're also attempting to portray you as a predator because of the men you dated who were younger than you. So I guess all of that added up to the internet attempting to cancel you again." She can't even come up with anything to say in response, she's just praying that this is some sick dream she can wake up from.

"But on the bright side, your fans are trying to trend #TaylorSwiftIsLovedParty, and so many of them are coming to your defence. I honestly think it'll blow over in a few days. The TaylorNation account has been logged into in an attempt to divert peoples attention and we'll release some anonymous source articles over the next few days so don't worry too much about it." Taylor sighs

"Well I can't promise you that, but please keep me updated." She knows she should be focusing on the positive, the way her fans have been reacting. But for some reason, her self-sabotaging mind can't stop focusing on all the negative things that she knows is being said about her. The fact that the situation right now feels like a repeat of 2016, she barely survived that. She doesn't know how she's supposed to do it again.

"Okay, I will. Bye for now, I'll email you some more stuff later."

"Okay, talk to you soon" The call disconnects and Taylor hangs her head, resting it in her hands and completely spiralling. She just can't do this anymore. Once again she just wants to run away from it all but she knows that that would be letting them win, it would be admitting defeat to something she hasn't done. But god she feels like giving up. Despite knowing that it's not healthy for her to do so, Taylor logs onto Twitter. She just feels the urge to know exactly what is being said. She goes to the trends and sees the hashtag, her mood sinks even lower but she clicks on it, wanting to probe further. The further she scrolls, the lower her mood drops. Despite this, she continues scrolling, paragraphs of hate tweets filling her brain.
