Missing You

Joe wakes up to the loud, annoying blaring of an alarm. He stretches his arms up over his head before quickly shutting off his alarm and letting out a soft groan. He lifts his head of the pillow, looking over to his girlfriend's side of the bed before quickly remembering she's still not here, she's in Nashville playing a show and seeing her family. Joe had wanted to go with her, hates when they're separated for more than a few days but he's got unavoidable meetings so he hadn't been able to follow her - so now here he is, missing her more than anything. His heart almost aches. She's been gone for a week now and all he wants is to have her back with him. To be able to hold her close again. She's become so important to him in the time they've known one another so this separation is difficult, more difficult than he'd even anticipated. He reminds himself that it's only two more Taylor-less sleeps and then she'll be back. He lets out a small sigh, before climbing slowly out of bed - really not wanting to have to get on with the day. Rain is pelting down across the New York city scape just outside the window, it makes him think of her. She loves the rain, and it almost makes him a little sad. Which is ridiculous of course, it hasn't actually been that long. But he can't help it.

As he's sitting and eating breakfast, his phone buzzes. He looks down, noticing it's from Taylor.

T - Hey! I know you have a really busy day but I just wanted to say that I love and miss you a lot. Also my moms dog almost licked my whole face off to wake me up this morning...

Joe feels a smile form on his face, god he misses her so much. Her moms dog loves licking people's faces - and it's the size of a horse so who could even stop it? It drives Taylor crazy, even more so because she's a cat person.

J - I love you too. Only two more sleeps until I can see you again! Tell Kitty good job, waking you up is impossible.

T - Hey! You're meant to be on my side!

Joe laughs, picturing Taylor playfully pouting. It makes his heart clench. Some days he really hates their jobs, wishing that they could be in the same place and not forced to fly all over the globe so often. But of course he loves his work, and he knows Taylor does too. There isn't too much room for complaint, it just sucks when he misses her like this.

J - Oh love I always am - but I'm also going to call it like it is!

Joe puts his phone down and finishes getting ready, just making it out of the door in time to beat traffic.

Later that evening, Joe's completely exhausted. His meetings had dredged on for hours and he has no idea how he's survived the day. His tired eyes are doing their best to concentrate on the road as he drives himself back to their apartment - dreading the thought of being there alone. Sometimes - and it isn't often anymore - when he's left alone to his thoughts, his mind wonders, and not in the good way. He finds himself sinking back to the place he was in a few years ago - before his life had taken a turn for the better, before Taylor. And after the incredibly long day, all he wants to do is cuddle up on the couch with her - because missing her is already making him feel blue. They'd texted a couple of times throughout the day, but ultimately they'd both busy doing other things. He knows Taylor played her show yesterday, she's sent him all sorts of videos from her performance - so today she's been spending time with her family for the first time in a while.

As he pulls into their apartment, his exhaustion grows and he's looking forward to an early night, knowing that it'll bring him one day closer to seeing his girlfriend again. He hurries through the door, quickly ordering a pizza before heading upstairs to shower. As he makes his way back downstairs, he receives a call from Taylor.

"Hey love, what's up?" He answers immediately.

"Nothing, just missing you. How was your day?" Her voice is angelic to his ears, god he misses her so much. Getting to talk to her is the highlight of his days. It genuinely hurts being away from someone you love so much - no matter how big or small the time is.

"Long, exhausting. I miss you so much. How was yours?" Joe flops down on the couch, giving her his full attention.

"It was good, spent a bit of time with my mom which was nice." Joe hears Taylor let out a small sigh, he knows how close she is with her mom and it sucks she doesn't get to see her more often. They're mostly based in London nowadays.

"Oh yeah, how's she doing?"

"She's alright, I think she was pretty happy to just chill with me today. We haven't had a whole lot of one-on-one time recently."

"I know, hopefully things settle down for the both of us soon and we can spend some time in Nashville." Suddenly the doorbell rings, he forgot he'd ordered food. "Hold on, I just gotta get the door." Joe quickly gets up to get the delivery, wanting to get back to his conversation as soon as possible. He says a quick thank you, before closing the door again - placing the food down on the counter.

"So what are we having for dinner?" It takes Joe a moment to recognise that the voice is no longer coming from the phone. He spins around faster than he ever has in his life and sure enough - there she is. Standing right in front of him, a huge smile on her face. Time seems to stop for a moment and Joe just stands there, shocked for just a moment before quickly regaining himself and practically running over to her, engulfing her in his arms. Holding each other tight is enough to make Joe instantly feel better. This is exactly what he'd needed.

"You're here." He whispers into her hair, breathing her in deeply.

"I'm here." She murmurs, her arms tightly wound round his neck as they both relish in the proximity that has been sorely missed this past week.

"God, I missed you so much Taylor." Joe mumbles, closing his eyes and tightening his arms around her - never wanting to let go again.

"I missed you too." She returns softly. His exhaustion has seemingly vanished having her back here. Her head pressed into his chest is just perfect, this is how it should always be. Joe feels Taylor lean back in his arms before quickly reaching up and kissing him. Joe happily deepens the kiss, needing her to know how much he'd missed her. How happy he is that she's here. He'll never be able to properly express how much them being apart affects him - she's always been better at expressing her feelings. He feels a stray tear slide down his cheek, Taylor must've felt it too because she quickly wipes it away before looking up at him with her shining blue eyes. Eyes that he has found himself getting lost in so many times before. She smiles up at him, his arms still around her body, refusing to let go. Joe smiles back at her, kissing her forehead gently.

"Why are you back early?" He asks, slightly curious. Taylor simply shrugs.

"I really missed you, I didn't need to be there anymore so I came back." Joe can see the tears in her eyes, confirming what he already knew. That she missed him just as much as he's been missing her - even though neither of them really know how to explain it. Joe pulls her to his chest, holding her as close as he can. He feels her arms tighten around him in return, both just needing the proximity right now.

"I'm so glad you did." He whispers, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. They just hold each other for a while, needing that contact after the difficult week. The pizza is long forgotten and so are any other worries or stresses Joe had been dealing with before she'd appeared in front of him. Everything is right again now that the most important person in his life is back.

"I love you." He mumbles, kissing her head once more - his chest may explode with all the happiness he's feeling right now. There's just so much love here.

"I love you too." He hears her say, buried in his chest and making no signs of ever moving again. His heart feels so full, so grateful that she's done this. One of the best things about their relationship is how confident they both are about the others love - he knows she loves him as much as he loves her. It's never been a question, they've just always known. He's never been happier than he has been with her, and this moment almost proves that. The girl cradled up in his arms means the most to him, anything could happen and as long as they're together - they'll be okay.
