Joe wakes in the middle of the night, moonlight spilling into the room through the crack in the curtains. He stretches, immediately stretched out his arms to pull Taylor close. Much to his surprise, he's met with nothing but the mattress. Joe groans, he's so sleepy but his missing girlfriend is confusing him, unsure if he should go looking for her. There's a vast array of reasons Taylor would get out of bed at a ridiculous hour, sometimes she's had a bad dream and just doesn't want to wake him, but sometimes she's gone to eat something, or write a song. Joe sits up, rubbing his eyes as they adjust to the darkness of the room. He looks around to find no sign of Taylor, he swings his legs over the side of the bed, tugging a shirt over his body before getting up to look for her. He knows he probably won't be able to sleep until he at least knows she's okay. Joe rubs his eyes sleepily again before descending the stairs slowly. There's a light at the bottom of the stairs that causes him to wince.
Once Joe reaches the kitchen, he quickly realises Taylor's not there and feels a wave of worry wash over him. Usually this is where he'd find her. He sighs, running a hand through his hair before moving though the apartment. Sure enough, once he reaches her music room, he hears a soft piano melody emitting from within. A small smile creeps onto his face. She's writing again. Her best ideas seem to happen in the middle of the night. Joe quietly leans against the doorframe and watches her at work, incredibly enamoured with everything she's doing. This is her element, and it always amazes him how talented she is at this. He watches her mutter words to herself under her breath, playing a gentle tune on the piano, before quickly typing them into her notes. Joe has no idea how long he stands there for, but it must've been a while because when Taylor finally notices him, he sees her practically jump out of her own skin.
"Holy shit Joe, you scared me! How long have you been standing there?" He smiles at her, absolutely in love with her,
"Not sure. You're fascinating to watch when you do that." She blushes deeply. "How long have you been in here?" He asks, rubbing his eyes again and stifling a yawn.
"Uhh, I couldn't sleep. I think a while. But I finished it! I'm actually really proud of this one! I can't believe I wrote it all on my own, but when inspiration strikes I just need to roll with it!" Taylor beams excitedly and he can't help but chuckle, her smile could light up a whole room, and to him, it genuinely does. He walks over to the piano and sits beside her.
"Oh yeah, what's it about?" He presses a kiss to her cheek and slings an arm around her shoulder, pulling her to him, her head resting against his chest as they both find peace within the other.
"You, of course." She looks up at him apprehensively and he grins down at her. How had he gotten so lucky that someone as incredible as her would want to write some of the most beautiful love songs he'd ever heard, about him?
"Play it for me?" He asks her softly, their eyes meeting as she nods. He presses a gentle kiss to her lips before she sits back up, her fingers moving gracefully up and down the piano. Then she starts singing.
"We could leave the Christmas lights up till January..." Joe sits there, watching her with awe as she sings the song she just wrote, here, all by herself. About him. The song quite literally brings tears to his eyes, as many of her songs manage to. Everything she writes is just so beautiful and loving, she has such a way with words. He's completely astounded, this song is so personal, so raw about everything the two of them had navigated over the past couple of years. He barely even notices that she's finished the song until she turns to him, smiling softly. She's biting her lip, looking completely nervous.
"So, do you like it?" Her voice is timid, Joe just grabs her hands, pressing his lips to hers.
"I love it. And I love you. So so much Taylor. I know I can't put things into words quite as well as you can, but I really do love you. I almost don't know what to do with myself, that's how much I love you." She grins at Joe, squeezing his hands.
"I know you love me, of course I do. How could I not? You show me literally every day, I don't know what I'd do without you." He feels his eyes water again but she quickly wipes away his tears, kissing his cheek.
"I know for a while there, you were unsure and had doubts about me, about being in a relationship. I'm so glad that you're sure now." Joe whispers, avoiding looking Taylor directly in the eye.
"I did for a while, you're right. But that was because of my past experiences, not because you didn't show me that you love me. So many things have changed over the past three years. Now I'm with the right person, and I'm so happy to be confident in that." Joe looks at her and pulls her to him, resting her head on his chest, holding her as tight as he can. They both just sit there in comfortable silence, both of them so in love with the other in a way they can't quite explain, it's just so incredibly pure. Despite not having the words, the other understands the feeling, because they both love each other so deeply. No matter if they fight, or go weeks with an ocean in between them, they always find that their love overpowers anything else. They always find their way back to each other. Their two lives have become one, so wildly entangled that it'd be impossible to seperate them. Eventually, they both feel themselves succumbing to the pull of sleep, Joe can feel Taylor's body sinking further into him.
"Taylor, love, let's go back to bed." She lifts her head off his chest and he finds himself lost in her sleepy blue eyes. She stands up, entwining their fingers before tugging him off the piano stool. He delicately kisses her forehead, enjoying the last of this moment before he leads them both up the stairs.
Once they reach their dark bedroom, Taylor immediately snuggles under the covers. Joe tugs off his shirt before climbing in beside her. His arms wrap firmly around her, as he'd been intending when he first woke up.
"I love you too. I realised I didn't say it back." Taylor mumbles sleepily into Joe's chest. He gently rubs circles on her back, holding the woman he loves even closer, a smile playing on his lips.
"I know you do." And with those final words, the couple falls asleep together, both holding the other close, enjoying the physical contact. Her song had managed to touch the both of them, and Joe knows for sure that he's more in love with her today than he had been yesterday.
