Stars.

I know that there are stars in the sky,
Even though I cannot see them tonight.
Smog obstructs my desperate gaze,
And I feel it within my lungs.
There is a temptation to state that I cannot breathe,
But I know that I'll live long enough to pull through.
I'll live to see that the stars are still where I left them;
Hope is never lost forever,
Though it sometimes feels that way.
It may take some time, but those stars will eventually
Shine through the smog; through the sea
Of artificial lights and their sickening glow
Which tries to detract from the wonder of the sky.
Despair is momentary
When compared to the permanence of the stars
That make us appreciate what it is to be alive.
