A Poem for Shay.

I think there are about 3000 miles between you and I,
And somehow I've still lost track of the number of times
You've made me smile, even on the days where I didn't think I could.
You are so very special, and I can't quite put my finger on it -
Is it your honesty? The kindness in your eyes?
Perhaps it's how you always look beautiful, even when you're struggling,
Or the skill with which you make your jokes?
I see you speaking up for yourself, I see you in love, I see you
Being the person that I'd like to be:
I see the wit, the talent, the strength, the virtue
That so many people don't ever find.
You're gentle, healing those around you by bearing your scars,
Your pain, your grace.
It is the least I can do to to take the smiles you gave me
And send them back to you.
