The enchanting hues of pink and orange painted the evening sky as the Mitchell Mansion's garden echoed with the laughter of two children and a nurturing woman who bore the responsibilities of both motherhood and caregiving. Seher had weathered the storms of her past, but in this moment, her inner child rejoiced. Playing with her little daughter and her newfound companion, Liam, brought an unparalleled joy.
Throughout the day, Seher and Liam had forged a beautiful bond. To Liam, Seher was his "Belle," a fun and kind presence, unlike the stern caretakers he had encountered before. She allowed him to express himself freely, and in her company, he felt that the world was just right. In his imaginative three-year-old mind, Meher was a late birthday gift, his baby, granted by God after he had wished for a baby or a pet dog on his third birthday three months earlier.
As the laughter and merriment continued in the garden, Daniel emerged from his office. A full day of meetings and worrisome thoughts had kept him occupied, and he hadn't even had time for lunch due to a video conference. He had entrusted Rhonda with ensuring that both the girls and Liam were fed a proper lunch on time.
Hearing the laughter from the garden, Daniel was drawn toward it. The father within him swelled with pride and delight as he observed his son, Liam, experiencing unbridled happiness and carefree moments. For a while now, he had worried that Liam was becoming distant and acting older than his years, carrying a burden Daniel couldn't quite grasp. This sight, however, was a soothing balm to his heart.
His attention then turned to Meher, the little doll, who was captivated by the world around her. Every blade of grass, every leaf, and every flower held her rapt attention. Daniel was captivated by the way a one-and-a-half-year-old perceived the world, free from bias.
As Daniel observed the children, Seher couldn't help but steal a lingering glance at him. In that moment, he was undeniably handsome, resembling one of those charismatic Hollywood stars she had seen in movies since her arrival in Chicago. His dark blue blazer had been discarded, his tie loosened to reveal a hint of his chest, and his sleeves casually rolled up, exuding an irresistible charm that was quintessentially masculine. Under the warm, dusky glow of the setting sun, his brown hair took on an almost ethereal quality, and the veins on his forearms, subtly pronounced, added to his allure. Seher, despite her life's trials, still retained a certain innocence, and this unfamiliar sensation, a tingling warmth, stirred within her as she gazed at Daniel. It was a feeling she couldn't quite comprehend, an uncharted territory in her emotional landscape.
Lost in her admiration of Daniel's appearance, Seher was gently jolted back to reality when something collided with her legs. She looked down and saw both children hugging her legs. Unable to resist, she lovingly placed a hand on each of their heads and caressed them.
Daniel noticed this tender scene, smiled warmly, and made his way toward them. He knelt down beside the children, extending a hand to each of them. With their tiny fingers grasping his big hands, he gently pulled them closer to himself, enveloping them in a gentle embrace. In that moment, a sense of profound peace washed over Daniel.
He let go of them and turned his attention to Liam. "So, I see you've become friends with both Seher and Meher, huh?" he inquired, his voice filled with paternal warmth.
Liam's face lit up with pride, and he nodded enthusiastically. "Yes, Dada," he replied. "Dada," he pointed at Seher, "she's my Belle because she's pretty like Yellow Princess." Then, he turned to Meher, gently caressing her cheek as he spoke. "And she's my baby. You know, Dada, I asked God for a baby or a puppy on my birthday, and He gave me a baby. So, she's my baby, and she'll stay with me forever."
Liam's rambling continued, with the words "my baby" featuring prominently in his excited chatter. Meher, who couldn't understand the words but recognized "baby," held Liam's hand, pointed to herself, and joyfully exclaimed, "Lee," her adorable version of Liam, and "baby."
Liam was thrilled that she had said his name, and both children burst into laughter, sharing yet another beautiful moment. As the day drew to a close, Daniel found himself reluctant to let go of this precious time. He glanced at the children and inquired if they had already had their evening snack, though his focus was mostly on Liam, given Meher's limited understanding. Liam nodded with enthusiasm, and Meher copied, mimicking Liam's actions. Daniel chuckled at their adorable antics and playfully addressed Meher, "Well, Miss Sandhu, it seems that Liam here won't allow his baby to go anywhere. So, you don't really have a choice anymore." Their shared laughter filled the garden as the bonds between them continued to grow.
As the journey continued, Seher found herself seated in the passenger seat of the large SUV, while Daniel had efficiently secured Liam and Meher in their individual car seats. Daniel had deliberately chosen the spacious vehicle to ensure the children's comfort and accommodate Seher's belongings. Their destination was Seher's modest apartment, where she needed to collect her things.
Upon arriving at her apartment building, Daniel wasted no time. He expertly retrieved both children from their car seats and cradled them in his arms, effortlessly carrying one in each. Seher couldn't help but protest, voicing concerns about his safety while lugging both of them up three flights of stairs. In a playful tone, Daniel responded, "Ma'am, I may be 35, but I have the strength of a 20-year-old, and I can handle two little babies. I'm quite offended that you doubt me!" Seher giggled at his response and conceded, adding a humorous remark, "No sir, I don't doubt your abilities, but please don't come complaining when your back acts up later." Their banter lightened the mood as they ascended the flights of stairs, finally reaching her apartment on the third floor.
Seher unlocked the door and ushered the man carrying her precious cargo inside. With Liam and Meher safely on the ground, Meher grabbed Liam's hand and excitedly led him to her room, which she shared with her mother. Meanwhile, Daniel took a moment to observe Seher's home. At first, he couldn't help but notice certain safety hazards, like protruding nails and ill-fitted pipes, causing a momentary concern for Liam's safety. However, he quickly scolded himself for being overly critical and elitist.
Returning his attention to Seher's home, he found it to be cozy and homely. Photographs adorned the walls, capturing moments of the mother-daughter duo. One frame featured an elderly American couple he recognized as Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, who had recommended Seher as a nanny for Liam. Daniel ventured further and discovered a small white structure, intricately carved, containing an image of a deity he assumed Seher worshipped. In front of the image, an oil lamp flickered, emphasizing Seher's deep religious beliefs-an aspect of her life that starkly contrasted with his own. Oddly, he found himself drawn to this cultural difference.
As Seher finished packing her belongings in record time, they made their way back to Mitchell Mansion, where the adventure of this newfound family was just beginning.
