Trigger Warning: shooting mentioned (Cheifs parade)
Taylor was already in Melbourne, Australia when Travis was back in Kansas to celebrate the Super Bowl win with a parade. It was fairly early in the morning for her when Tree knocked on her hotel room door and just entered without waiting for her to answer. Taylor was just getting dressed and therefore looked at her publicist surprised by the sudden entry. Taylor threw over her pullover and then waited for Tree to explain what was going on. "Taylor, call Travis!", she just said. "What? Why?", she asked but did what Tree had said simply because it was Tree. "He doesn't pick up, what's going on?", Taylor finally wanted to know. "There... I don't know a lot just yet but... There's been a shooting at the parade in Kansas", Tree then chose to explain. "What?! No! No, Tree, don't joke with that!", Taylor shook her head trying to call Travis again.
"I'm sorry, I'm not joking", Tree mumbled. "But... where... were they still out there?", Taylor asked looking at the clock. She had talked to Travis about his schedule but she couldn't remember anything. She was just scared. Terrified. A shooting? Right where he was? Her legs suddenly became all wobbly, so Taylor sank down on her bed. "Pick up, pick up, pick up", she mumbled at her phone but it stayed quiet again. Taylor knew that this didn't need to mean anything but it could. He could've gotten hurt. He could... be shot down and lying somewhere bleeding. Alive or... not. "Tree, do something!", she blurted out, and Tree sat down next to her, hugged her, and took her own phone to try and get more information. Taylor couldn't focus on whatever Tree was saying on the phone, she just stared at Travis' contact with shaking hands. When she had been scared of losing him, she didn't exactly imagine something like this. But this was worse.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed. A message: "I'm okay. I'll call you when I can." and a shared location. Her whole body came back to reality. He was okay. At least he said he was. But that he could text her was good. So he must be alive at least. She checked the shred location and found him to be in some building. So he was safe. He was somewhere where people could help if he needed it. "Tree", she mumbled and showed her the message and the location. "Okay. Okay, that's good", Tree said also a little relieved. She had now heard rough information about what might've happened and that the team was out of danger but it had been unchecked info. His message seemed to prove that though.
Taylor still continued to pace up and down her room for the next hour. Tree gave her best to get her hands on some secured info about what happened but it wasn't that easy just yet. It wasn't even her job but she wanted to have something to calm Taylor down with and also herself. A shooting was horrible. No matter who it was targeted to. But Taylor grew so much confidence and happiness by Travis' side. Tree didn't want to imagine what it would do to her if he was injured or worse.
Then finally, Travis was able to call her. Tree witnessed Taylor talk fast and listen concentrated to him. He assured her multiple times that he was okay and that everyone she knew personally was safe now. That danger was over. He was emotional of course and it wasn't easy to handle but talking to Taylor helped him too. She let him figure out his words and could calm herself down enough to then calm him down as well. Tree at some point noticed how late it was. She hated it but she had to tell Taylor that they had to leave for the stadium soon if they wanted to do the normal soundcheck and all that. "Can we talk again later?", Tree heard Travis through the phone. She hated to interrupt them. "Yeah. I text you when I can talk, okay? Maybe you should talk to your mom? Do you think you can do that?", Taylor asked him. She didn't want him to be alone just yet. It didn't sound like he was okay emotionally. "Good. I'll give my phone to Tree, okay? If you need anything, call and she can give me the phone, okay?", Taylor made sure. He agreed and soon they did just that. Tree held Taylor's phone close after they had made their way to the stadium and Travis had promised to talk to Donna.
When Taylor had some time later, she locked herself in her wardrobe at the stadium and called Travis again. They were both a lot calmer now but nothing lighthearted came to mind. "I wish I could be with you", Taylor sighed. She was worried and also hated not being able to be there for him. "I could really need you", he admitted silently. He didn't want to make her feel worse but it was the truth. Today had been terrifying. He hadn't been close enough to the shooting to get injured but he had heard some shots and even more screams. He had seen people panic and in the news or on people's phones, he had seen blood and crying faces. This was his city. His home. He had always felt safe here. "Do you think you'll still come here? I can understand if you don't want to leave your friends or if you don't want to watch all the people party in the stadium", she asked honestly. "No, I wanna come. I... I don't know if I'll come to the concert with you but I need you", he said. "Okay. You know, I'll come to you, if you... Like if you really need me to", she said. He had said that too before. That he would cancel everything and come if she needed him to. And of course, she would do the same for him. "No, Tay, it's okay. It's just a few days. I'll be okay", he assured her, and also a little bit himself. So they left it at that for now.
