Will went home after the scan. Rather, he went back to the hotel. He wanted to call his mom and tell her the baby and JJ were fine and he said he'd be over bright and early for the baby shower preparations, even if it didn't start until 3pm so it would be a family afternoon/summer night instead of in the day when the heat was the worst.
Delilah also figured JJ had clued him in on the plans to bake the baby shower cake and he didn't want to introduce on that, which was nice of him, but he could've been there and they wouldn't have minded. It was his baby, too, of course.
Still, Delilah couldn't ignore that small part of her that was relieved Will wasn't here, because she didn't have to feel awkward about wrapping her arms around JJ at the kitchen island as JJ mixed the eggs into the rest of the ingredients in the bowl, a soft waft of vanilla already warming the room and making Delilah's head spin.
JJ always smelled like vanilla, too. It was a very sweet scent, so soft and so JJ that it was almost laughable how dizzy it made Delilah feel.
It was either that or there was a gas or carbon monoxide leak, which was unlikely because JJ was giggling in Delilah's arms as she peppered kisses on her neck like the world was all right for once.
Maybe it was. Maybe Delilah was just dizzy because of how much she loved JJ and felt alive in this moment.
Maybe it was the way JJ's eyes lit up at a glint of sunlight breaking through the trees in the last gasps of a setting sun. Maybe it was the way her smile left no marks on Delilah's skin with her kisses over the finally fading bruise on her collarbone where she'd bit down two weeks earlier.
Maybe it was the way that her hands wiped away a few flecks of flour on Delilah's cheeks and traced the constellation of freckles left behind. Maybe it was the way they didn't have to say a single thing the entire time, just communicated with their bodies because there was an invisible string intertwining their souls together and that meant unconditional and reticent understanding was their speciality.
It was their language, their love language, the thing that bound them together.
They'd always been able to read each other.
It was why JJ had walked so easily through the cracking walls in Delilah's haunted house of a heart. The ghosts and monsters hadn't scared her. The scars and bodies and blood, so much blood, that hadn't scared her. She kept walking through the darkness and she shattered the windows open to let the light in.
The moon could not survive without the sun. It needed a purpose; something to dedicate itself to; something to die for; something to live for most of all.
It was overwhelming at times, just how much Delilah was capable of loving JJ. She'd never thought herself capable of feeling anything of real unconditional love after it died with Dylan. She had only gotten worse over the years; more hardened; more dangerous.
