I thought after eight hundred years of Mikaelson Balls, high-society fundraisers and dinners, I had the routines and act mastered. Midsummers and I'm assuming any event held on this island is nothing more than a central hub of gossiping and business transactions.

Don't get me wrong. That's what the main focus for the Mikaelson's when they held their events, but at least there, there was drama.

Abbie and Rebekah would argue over a boy or shoes. Kol would flirt with any witch who didn't know better. Marcel would watch Rebekah from afar.. a treat just out of his reach.

Even in the company of the Mikaelson's, there was still more beneath the surface than fake smiles and big checks. Abbie and Rebekah were the happiest to dress up and mingle. Elijah was happy to have his family together, even if it was just for a night. Klaus usually got what he wanted— from the help of Elijah and Abbie— while Kol enjoyed the flaunting atmosphere. He loved thinking people worshiped at his feet.

Cocky bastard.

Here, it feels cold and impersonal. Everyone feels like an outsider trying to look in and see how much better the next person is living. While most of them could have more than most people here, they decide to waste it on petty things just to say they have it. It's never about the significant meaning with people like this. It's just about the brag.

People thought the same of the Mikaelson's but if they peeked under the veil, they would've seen the true significance. The pretty, sparkling, brand new dresses Abbie, Rebekah and I wore were because the guys like the smiles it puts on our faces.

Elijah always made sure to extend the invitations to the witches, knowing Kol would be bored without them. Klaus kept his business talk to the end of the night, just to give time to Abbie and Elijah, wanting them to enjoy the party.

They seem like shallow tasks, but they were sacrifices we all made for the one day. We came together as one, supporting one another, keeping the big picture in the forefront of our minds.

Here, there seems to be only one goal and that's to have the most and how to get more of it. Even though it's obvious who wins this little game every year, people still strive to have it and more. It's presented with forced smiles and dresses with the tugs tucked safely away.
