Abbie
3 months later
Beacon Hills, California"This isn't fair. I don't want to miss my niece's first Thanksgiving." Cora whines, squeezing Haidyn in her arms. Haidyn wraps her arms around her, before pushing her away. "It's just for a few days. We'll be back before you know it and then we'll celebrate here." Derek strides out of his kitchen, leaving me with a pouting Cora.
Sliding onto one of the stools, she props her chin on her fist and huffs. "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll love having her here for her first Christmas instead." Her face lights up, as she sits up straighter. "Oh my God. Y'all are going to be here for Christmas?" My lips thin, as I pack the last few things of Haidyn's.
"Haidyn will be. Derek and I agreed that I would get Thanksgiving and he gets Christmas." Her smile drops. "Why aren't y'all spending them together?" You mean despite the ongoing divorce? No idea.
I busy myself by refolding some of Haidyn's blanket and clothes, trying to avoid her glare."We are spending them together." Derek strides back into the room, dropping a duffel bag on the counter, before looking at me. "I'm ready when you are."
I just blink at him. There's no way he's volunteering to go back to New Orleans with me. There's no way he'd willingly spend any time with my family.
Or he's just going because Haidyn is and he doesn't trust the family around her. Heaven forbid I get the same choice I gave him. It's not like Peter killed his sister or anything.
"You can stay here and sign the divorce papers. We'll be back next week." I grab Haidyn's bag, going into the living room where she's playing by the window. "Come on, Sweet Girl. We have a plane to catch."
"I'm going to miss you, little witch." Cora pecks a quick kiss to her cheek, smiling when she sees the look I give her. She's been calling her that for a few months now and her excuse is 'What? We've never had a witch in the family. I'm allowed to brag.'
I'll never admit it, but it's cute and growing on me.
"We need to go. Security will be a nightmare if we wait any longer." Derek opens the loft door, motioning me through. I stay where I'm at. "I'm not kidding, Derek. You're not going with us."
"And I don't remember asking for your opinion. Go to the car, Abbie."
"Sign the divorce papers, Derek."
"Stop being annoying."
"Stop being an ass."
"How about you both stop and just screw each other already?" Cora mutters, both our heads snap towards her. "Stay out of this!"
"Don't snap at her!" I snap back at him. His eyes narrow, his jaw clenched. "Go get in the car, before I carry both of you out of here."
"Go to hell, Derek." I growl, shoving past him in the doorway. The only reason I'm leaving is because I can't stay any longer. Because he's right. If I don't get there soon, I'll miss the flight.
He presses the button to call the elevator, his gaze burning into the side of my head. We don't speak to each other though. Not in the elevator or the car. Not when we get to the airport or board our flight.
We have a layover in Colorado, so I take this time to feed Haidyn her bottle, while scrolling through Rebekah's long thread of messages, updating me about her time in New York.
Apparently I'm the only one coming home for the holidays. Well, she was there, but she's running a few errands but promises to come back before I leave. I'm kinda bummed she won't be there, but I get her enjoying her freedom when she can. It's only a matter of time before our brothers drag us back home. Maybe now that Freya's living there, they'll ease off of us.
