Abbie
4 months later
I'm officially 9 months pregnant and over this pregnancy. I'm huge, hungry and exhausted. This little girl has overstayed her welcome and I'm beyond ready to have her.
"There's no way you could possibly get any bigger." Jackson cringes as I walk up to the nurses station. I glare at him, silently warning him not to say anything else.
Of course he ignores me.
"No, seriously. That baby has to be huge.. and it's supposed to.." he peers over the desk towards my lap and his eyes widen. "It's supposed to fit out of you?" My eyes drop down to my stomach, as I swallow. I try not to think about it, but there's no way I can just ignore it.
Multiple slaps and hits draw my attention back to where Jackson is rubbing both his arms and glaring at everyone. I smile, shaking my head. "I told you not to say anything." I go to grab my next patient file, when Melissa swoops in and snatches it away.
I see we're still playing this little game.
I growl, spinning around to follow her. "I'm fine, Melissa. After this, I'll go take my lunch." She wags her finger at me, stopping next to Scott. "You'll go now and I'll handle this. It's for them anyway." I roll my eyes and carefully sit down in the chair with a huff.
The phone starts to ring and Melissa smiles, pointing at it. "If you want to work, you can answer that." She starts to walk away but not before she calls over her shoulder. "You better be on break when I get back." Rolling my eyes again, I answer the phone, wedging it between my shoulder and ear as I log into the computer and bring up my files.
"Dr. Abbie Kate.."
There's a brief pause, followed by a small laugh. "Doctor, huh? I never thought I'd see the day." My brows pinch together, as I lean over to check the caller ID. It's not from inside the hospital and the zip code is New Orleans.
Unease settles in my stomach, swallowing hard, I force out the words. "I'm sorry. Who's calling?" There's another a beat of silence, before a breathy laugh. "I'm truly hurt that you would forget your favorite brother." My head jerks back, as I replay the voice in my head.
I don't have an all the time favorite brother, but Kol always joked about that. "Kol?"
"Well I guess you haven't forgotten about me, Kate."
"Why are you calling me? Why do you sound different?" There's a hum on the other end, followed by a cough and my body goes rigid.
"Kol.." I nearly plead, not liking the outcomes this call may have. "Relax, baby sister. It's nothing either of us can do anything about. I was just calling to ask that you come home for a couple of days. If I'm going to die, I'd rather it be with a friendly face." I spin the rings on my finger around, biting my bottom lip to stop the tears from falling.
"I really can't believe you told me you were dying over the phone, Kol. How am I supposed to drive there, knowing this is the last time I'll get to see and speak to my brother." My voice shakes, as I take a calming breath. I don't even know how this is happening, but Kol wouldn't make a call like this unless there were no other options.
"Don't blame yourself, Kate. This was a product of my own doing. Just come see me, so I can give you a proper goodbye and give my soul a bit of peace." Just as the dam is about to break inside me, Derek and Cora walk up, both of them probably sensing my mood. As if the tears now freely falling weren't a dead giveaway.
My lip trembles as they continue to eye me carefully, so I cover my mouth and close my eyes. When I open them again, I'm calmer and try to focus on that. "I'll be there tomorrow morning. You better be alive and ready to answer all my questions." There's a small laugh. "Ill see you tomorrow, Kate. I love you, baby sis."
