Derek
It's taking everything in me not to lose it right now.
So much has been thrown at me and the only thing I could do was sit there and take it. It didn't take long to figure out what kind of dinner this was. I came because I didn't want to miss Haidyn's first Thanksgiving. Abbie is more than welcome to Christmas at my house and I plan to tell her that.
Part of me did consider crashing their dinner was the worst idea ever. That it would ruin any chance of them having a normal family dinner. I guess that wasn't the case to begin with. When I arrived, Freya was holed up in the study with Haidyn and they all seemed to be in intense conversation.
Then Avery so kindly pointed out Abbie and her ex, Lucien. She was practically in his lap the entire time, whispering to each other and laughing. I had no problem telling him who I was. Kissing her and putting her ring back on her finger felt damn good.
She took them off this morning before she left. She hadn't taken them off after she signed the papers, so watching her do it this morning hurt. It hurt worse than anything I've ever been through.
So when I saw them together and Avery told me it was her ex, I got mad. When he called her that nickname, said they kissed and that he still loved her, sent me over the edge. I don't care if I asked for the divorce or not. She signed them, I didn't. She's still my wife and she'll forever be mine. Fuck those papers and her thinking taking off my ring will change that. She carries my last name and is the mother of my child. I'm not going anywhere.
"Are you going to tell me what that was about?" She looks up at me through her lashes, before looking back at Haidyn, stacking more blocks on their tower. "What else needs to be said? Aurora had no problem spelling it out for you."
"Stop assuming I know all I need to know to understand." I grind out. "I just found out that if you die, every vampire you turned will die with you. Including myself and our daughter!"
"Then I guess it's a good thing I can't be killed." She hisses through gritted teeth. "Maybe you can put that under the pro column for once. You may have been turned without your consent, but at least you're one of the few vampires who have nothing to worry about if this is all true."
"But they don't know that." She looks up at me and sighs. "There's a reason I didn't tell you what I was when you suspected something. I've lived with this secret for a thousand years for a reason. If people knew there was an original vampire with no means to kill them, they would've stopped at nothing to try and kill me. I would've been a target. Snatched up and tortured until they found a way to do so. Anything to bring the Mikaelson's down."
She scoops Haidyn up, walking past me towards the door. I grab her, stopping her. "We're not done talking." She looks up at me and calmly says "Freya is coming. She's probably coming to get Haidyn to let the girls play."
There's a knock on the door, making me feel stupid. I release her, as she opens the door and her face lights up when she sees Hope. "Hi, Sweet Girl. I've missed you." She kisses her head, squeezing her tight, before passing Haidyn to Freya.
"She's trying to walk, so make sure to keep a close eye on her. She'll want a nap in a few." Freya nods, offering me a small smile before leaving.
Abbie closes the door, turning around and leaning against it. "I'm trying to be better, Derek." I'm caught off guard at her confession, but she explains before I can ask what she means. "You have to understand that living with a secret like this isn't easy. The only people that know outside of this house are Davina, Marcel, Stefan and Damon."
"I'm sure you had no problem telling them." Her eyes narrow, before she shakes her head and rolls her eyes. "No. I didn't. They didn't have the questions you have and what I was didn't affect them. I told you because our daughter had the potential to be one. Hell, before Hope, we didn't even know it could happen naturally. I'm a black magic experiment gone wrong. Hope and Haidyn are the natural loopholes in nature. Do you know how terrifying that is? That I potentially put this curse on my own daughter?!" Tears well up in her eyes, which she quickly wipes away, pushing off the door.
