Avery

Don't react.

Don't react!

Don't BLOODY react!!

I should've stayed home, but of course, I couldn't resist not seeing them.

How stupid do I feel now?!

I should've taken Abbie and Lucien making-out in the courtyard as my first sign. Then second being Tristian. He doesn't go anywhere without his lunatic sister.

I knew I should've asked Freya who was here when she mentioned the guest. I was so distracted by Haidyn, I barely listened.

Get it together, Avery. It's one dinner and then you can leave. Someone can watch Haidyn, while Abbie and I go and drown our sorrows.

"I'm sorry I'm late. Just freshening up. I did want to look pretty." Aurora smiles a little too hard at Klaus, making my blood boil. "Should've tried harder, Love." So much for not reacting.

Tristian gives me a look, which I return. I wish he would try something. He may be older, but I have a witch on my side. Two if we count Freya.

"Ah! Avery, I was wondering if you would be joining us." Her eyes look me over, her mouth turning down in a frown. "I see some of us were in a bigger rush to get here." That'll do it.

I go towards her, but Lucien grabs my arm. I look at his hand, his face, then his hand again. He releases me, holding his hand up in surrender.

"Well, well. If it isn't my old friend Lucien." She beams, batting her lashes at him. Abbie doesn't even flinch. She watches Lucien, her eyes empty and daring. Maybe I won't have to get my hands dirty tonight.

"Hello, Aurora. It's been ages. You look.." his eyes greedily take her in, making Abbie's narrow. I'm making a mental note to tease her about it later when he's interrupted. "You look ravishing." All heads snap to Klaus, who's smiling at her. Aurora's cheeks tint, her eyes sparkling.

Nevermind. Abbie will have to beat me at ripping out her heart.

Before anyone can plunge their hands in chest or rip eyes out, Elijah struts in, his suit perfectly in place, looking as if this room didn't just make the top ten deadliest places in the world.

"Welcome to our home. I do wish it was under better circumstances." He stands behind his chair, facing all of us. "Better circumstances? It's dinner, Lijah." Abbie's brows furrow.

He doesn't even look at her. Aurora snorts, shaking her head. "I see you're still the naive little girl you've always been." Abbie doesn't look at her, but I sure as hell do. It's one thing for her to attack me, but Abbie? This bitch is just asking to be my next tortured victim.

"As I was saying, we all face a common threat... a prophecy warns that my siblings and I would all fall within a year. I fear my sister already has." Abbie pales, her hands gripping the chair in front of her.

I wait for her to say something, but she doesn't. So I step up beside her, looking at Elijah. "What do you mean by a prophecy? What threat is so great you fear it'll destroy the family?! Where is Rebekah?!" He glances at me, before looking at Klaus.

Hands land gently on my arms, giving them a small squeeze. "Come sit, Love. We'll explain in due time." I turn to him, searching his eyes for anything, but there's nothing. Not a flicker of emotion. No anger, pain, rage. Nothing.

"Nik," His fingers flex. "Sit, Avery." He pulls me back, pulling my chair out for me. I take a seat, Lucien doing the same for Abbie. When she's seated beside me, I look at her and find the same emotionless expression on her face.
