Abbie
Stepping out onto the porch, my stomach is an absolute wreck and my head is even worse. I didn't sleep a wink last night, worrying about today. I told myself I wanted to prove to them that I make mistakes, but my kids aren't mistakes.
I start for the steps, ready to help Derek, when I see Avery carrying both boys. Both of them approach the house, the girls running up to hug me.
"Don't make it a thing, Abbie." Avery warns, as I hug the girls, my eyes still glued to her. Stopping in front of me, she offers a soft smile. "They're family. I wouldn't miss this." I nod, understanding where she's coming from, but not agreeing because it might go badly.
"I could've, but Avery wouldn't let me." She rolls her eyes, adjusting Easton on her hip. "Get over it, Hale. Like it or not, they're your family too." He scoffs. "I have Peter. I don't need anymore psychopaths, much less a whole fleet of them." I smile, shaking my head as I stand up.
"Thank you for being here." He steps up onto the landing, leaning down and kissing me. "No problem."
Avery coos, stepping up on the porch. "Too bad he's lying. He complained the whole way."
"I remember you having a few choice words for Rebekah."
"Yeah. The bitch died in my top. Now it has a dagger size hole in it." I laugh, nodding my head towards the door. "Come on. Much longer and they'll come find us."
I lead the way through the house, bending down to talk to the girls when we enter the room. "There's some people I want you to meet. They're all excited to meet you again."
"Again?" Hope asks, blinking her big blue eyes at me. I nod, pointing around the room at everyone. "You were real little when you last saw them."
They both turn to look at everyone, Haidyn letting go first and going over to Klaus. Climbing up in his lap, she hugs his neck. "You're uncle Klaus, right?" His eyes find mine, a flash of uncertainty passes through them before he turns to her and smiles.
"Yes, little one. Did your mom tell you about me?" Haidyn nods. "She said I liked you when I was a baby." Klaus huffs a laugh, nodding. "We were both quite fond of each other."
Hope steps over to him next, Haidyn sliding out of his lap so Hope can see him. She doesn't climb in his lap like Haidyn, but she takes my empty seat and smiles at him.
I see the flash of pain in his eyes, and it hurts. He's missed all this time with her and it shows. Hope is the shy one and for her to be shy around her own dads hurts.
"Who are all these people, mommy?" Haidyn whispers, squeezing my hand. "Well, this is Uncle Kol and Davina." I point to them directly in front of us. "She looks just like you." She points to Davina and I smile. "She does, doesn't she?"
I point to the other side. "This is Aunt Freya and Aunt Rebekah." Pointing to the end. "This is your Uncle Elijah."
"Like Eli?" The weight in my stomach drops even further. They all look to me, and then behind me, their eyes going wide.
"Oh bloody hell." Rebekah gasps. I stand up, turning to see Avery and Derek in the doorway, clearly going unnoticed until now. "Woah.. wait just one second.." Kol spins around in his chair, his eyes ping ponging between Avery and I. "Who's bloody kids are these?!"
Davina smacks his arm. "Language, Kol!" She scolds. "I agree with Kol. I had a few more choice words in mind, but that'll do." Klaus deadpans, glaring at Avery.
The boys squirm out of Avery's arms, as Easton rushes over to Kol and Eli tugs on my hand. I scoop him up, deciding it's now or never. "Everyone, this is Eli and Easton. They're mine."
They all just blink.
"So Eli, as in Elijah?" Rebekah is the first to break the silence. I shake my head, adjusting him on my hip. "No. He's not named after anyone." I lie, but that's not important. Derek suggested the name and I loved it. I may have agreed because of Elijah but I swore I would never admit it.
"You hear Eli and automatically think of Elijah, Kate. You're not fooling anyone." And suddenly I'm having Deja vu.
"Eli is a noble name. I'm honored you chose such a strong name for him." Elijah boasts, adjusting his tie. I roll my eyes. "Obviously they're twins. You're telling me you couldn't think of another name besides Easton?" Klaus grunts. "Maybe another brother?"
"I thought the same thing, but we couldn't agree on how to spell Finn." Every head snaps to Derek. Avery throws her head back with a laugh, patting his arm. "You're slowly becoming my favorite."
"What the bloody hell is that?!" Kol barks, killing her laughter. We all freeze, Avery's hand resting on Derek's arm. "Kol!" Davina hisses. He ignores her, standing up, taking Easton with him.
"Is that a ring on your finger?!" He moves in closer, shaking his head. "That's not the one Klaus gave you."
"Of course it's not! Why would I wear that when we're not engaged?" Avery snaps back, jerking her hand away. "Why would you wear any other ring? I know that's not from another man, so who is it from?" Klaus' voice drips of venom.
I look to Derek to tell him to take the kids out, but he's glaring at Klaus. Bending down to Haidyn, I set Eli down, giving her his hand. "Take Hope and your brothers into the living room. I'll be there in a second." She does as she's told, as I take Easton from Kol, setting him down to follow.
Avery tilts her head, smiling at Klaus. "Why do you care? I wore your ring for 500 years and it didn't mean anything to you. Why does this bother you?"
"It bothers me because I've never met the wanker." Kol states, pulling Avery in for a hug, shocking all of us. "Seriously, I'll kill him if he looks at me wrong." He states, looking her in the eyes as he pulls away.
Avery smiles. Like really smiles. "He's great. You can meet him soon. The wedding is in a few weeks." She motions into the kitchen, more specifically to the fridge, where the invitation is hanging.
How the fuck did I miss that and more importantly, how did it get here?!
"So it's too late to be a bridesmaid?" Rebekah asks, rounding the table to hug her and look at the ring. "Sadly, yes, but it'll mean the world to me if you come. All of you." She turns her attention back to the room, but avoids looking at Klaus.
"I've rsvp'd months ago. You had me at 'open bar'." Davina smiles, Hayley nodding in agreement. "We wouldn't miss it for the world." Elijah assures her, pulling her into a hug.
I watch as everyone comes by to congratulate her and welcome Derek back, before heading into the living room. Derek follows Davina, leaving Klaus, Avery and I alone, which is suddenly the last place I want to be.
"I need to go talk to Elijah." Avery blurts, turning towards me. "I'll see you back at home? I have to meet the wedding planner tomorrow." I nod, even though everything inside of me is screaming to beg her to stay.
She nods to Klaus, but neither of them say anything as she leaves, stopping to say a quick goodbye.
When the front door closes behind her, his eyes shift to me. I don't know what to say or do. Honestly, I thought my biggest problem was going to be introducing the twins. I didn't know Avery was coming or else I would've done damage control yesterday. Hell, I would've begged her not to.
After a few minutes pass, he stands and starts to leave and that cuts me deep. "Nik," he stops, but doesn't turn around, which makes this worse. "I'm sorry. I should've told you."
His spine stiffens, as he stares at the wall. "No, Abbie Kate, you should've never let it happen." He leaves, leaving me to figure out what he meant.
I shouldn't have let Avery get engaged? I should have let her leave us? I shouldn't have brought her back here?
I don't know what he wanted me to stop, but it can't be good and that's a problem. If Klaus thinks there's a problem, he'll try and find a way to fix it. I don't know what he'll do, but the most Klaus-like solution to all of those is death, I'd say I need to get ahead of this while I can.
