Mingyu's mornings usually started with loud yawns and an energy that rivaled the sunrise itself. His boundless enthusiasm often earned teasing remarks from his members, but it was a charm they wouldn’t trade for anything. But lately, things had been different. His alarm rang on a chilly Monday morning, its sharp tone breaking through the stillness of the dorm. Mingyu groggily reached out to silence it but misjudged the distance, knocking the clock off his nightstand and sending it clattering to the floor.
“Ugh, great,” he mumbled, shaking his head and stretching. He swung his legs out of bed but miscalculated again, the weight of his body tipping him forward. He landed in an awkward heap on the floor.
“Nice one, Mingyu,” he muttered to himself, brushing it off as clumsiness. He was prone to accidents—his members joked that Mingyu could trip on air. But this felt different. His legs felt... off. Shaky. Like they didn’t belong to him.
By the time he joined the others at breakfast, Jeonghan raised an eyebrow. “What happened to your knee?” he asked, pointing to a fresh scrape.
Mingyu looked down, confused. “Oh, I must’ve bumped it earlier,” he replied with a sheepish grin, quickly changing the subject.
The signs started subtly. Mingyu would trip over his own feet more than usual, or bump into doorframes and furniture that had been in the same place for years. At first, the members didn’t think much of it.
“You’re such a klutz,” Seungkwan teased one day after Mingyu accidentally knocked over a stack of props during dance practice.
“Yeah, you should come with a warning sign,” Hoshi added, laughing.
Mingyu laughed along, though his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes.
As the weeks passed, things worsened. One morning, Mingyu tripped over the edge of the carpet in the hallway, hitting his shoulder against the wall. The loud *thud* startled Dino, who was brushing his teeth nearby.
“Mingyu-hyung, you okay?” Dino asked, his eyes wide with concern.
“Yeah, yeah,” Mingyu replied, rubbing his shoulder. “Just lost my balance.”
“You’ve been losing your balance a lot lately,” Dino said, narrowing his eyes.
“It’s nothing, really,” Mingyu insisted.
But it wasn’t nothing.
During a choreography session, Mingyu stumbled multiple times, his feet seemingly betraying him. Woozi stopped the music, frowning.
“Are you sure you’re okay? You’re off today,” Woozi said, his tone more concerned than critical.
“I’m fine,” Mingyu replied quickly, though his flushed cheeks and shaky hands said otherwise.
Wonwoo and Minghao, ever observant, exchanged a glance.
That night, Minghao approached Mingyu in the living room. “You’ve been different lately,” he said gently, sitting beside him.
“What do you mean?” Mingyu asked, feigning ignorance.
“You’re clumsier. You’ve been tripping, falling, bumping into things... It’s not like you. Did something happen?”
Mingyu hesitated, his heart racing. He couldn’t let them worry. “I’m fine, Hao. Really. Maybe I’m just tired.”
Minghao didn’t look convinced, but he let it go—for now.
A few days later, Mingyu’s condition took a dramatic turn. The group was heading to the company building for a meeting. As they climbed the stairs, Mingyu’s legs gave out without warning. He tumbled down three flights of stairs, his body colliding with the hard steps.
“Mingyu!” S.Coups shouted, his voice laced with panic.
The members rushed to his side. Minghao and Jeonghan were the first to reach him, carefully turning him onto his back. His face was pale, and his breathing ragged.
“Mingyu, can you hear me?” Jeonghan asked, his voice trembling.
“I... I’m fine,” Mingyu whispered weakly, though the bruises forming on his arms and the blood trickling from a cut on his forehead told a different story.
“You’re not fine,” S.Coups said firmly. “We’re taking you to the hospital. No arguments.”
The drive to the hospital was tense. Mingyu drifted in and out of consciousness, his head resting on Wonwoo’s shoulder.
At the hospital, the doctors immediately took him in for tests. The members waited anxiously in the lobby, their usual banter replaced with silence.
“What’s wrong with him?” Seungkwan asked quietly, his voice breaking.
“I don’t know,” S.Coups replied, running a hand through his hair. “But we’ll figure it out.”
Hours later, the doctor finally emerged.
“Mr Kim has a neurological condition that’s causing a loss of coordination and control over his limbs,” the doctor explained. “It’s why he’s been experiencing frequent falls and clumsiness. We’ll need to conduct more tests to determine the exact cause, but it could be related to nerve damage or an underlying illness.”
The room fell silent as the words sank in.
“Will he be okay?” Joshua asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
“With treatment and physical therapy, there’s a good chance he can regain control. But it will take time and patience.”
When Mingyu woke up, he was met with the worried faces of his members.
“Hey, big guy,” Hoshi said, forcing a smile. “You gave us a scare.”
Mingyu tried to sit up but winced in pain. “What happened?”
“You fell down the stairs,” Wonwoo said gently. “We know something’s been wrong for a while, Mingyu. Why didn’t you tell us?”
Tears welled up in Mingyu’s eyes. “I didn’t want to worry you. You all have so much on your plates already. I didn’t want to be a burden.”
“You’re not a burden,” Minghao said firmly, his voice steady. “You’re our brother. We’d do anything for you.”
“Yeah,” Dino added, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “We’re here for you, no matter what.”
The weeks that followed were challenging. Mingyu started physical therapy, working hard to regain control over his limbs. Some days were better than others. There were moments of frustration and doubt, but his members never let him feel alone.
Wonwoo and Minghao often accompanied him to his therapy sessions, offering quiet encouragement. Jeonghan made sure Mingyu ate properly, even when his appetite waned. S.Coups became his biggest cheerleader, reminding him of his strength on the tough days.
Slowly but surely, Mingyu began to improve. His steps became steadier, his movements more controlled.
One evening, as they sat together in the dorm, Mingyu looked around at his members, his heart full of gratitude.
“I don’t know what I’d do without you guys,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.
“We’re a team,” S.Coups said, pulling him into a hug. “We take care of each other.”
Though the road to recovery was long, Mingyu knew he wasn’t walking it alone. With his brothers by his side, he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
