Mingyu wasn’t the type to complain. He was the kind of guy who laughed off his clumsiness, brushed off bruises from dance practice, and always cracked jokes when the group was stressed. That’s why, when he first mentioned feeling off, no one really took it seriously.
It started small—missed beats in choreography, slower movements during vocal practice, a distant look in his eyes during meetings. S.Coups had chalked it up to exhaustion; they were all tired. The comeback was around the corner, and the pressure was suffocating. Everyone was running on fumes, but they pushed through because that’s what SEVENTEEN did.
“Mingyu, if you’re gonna keep spacing out like that, you’ll have to sit out the next practice,” Hoshi teased, tossing a towel at him after dance rehearsal one evening.
Mingyu forced a laugh, wiping sweat from his brow, though his skin felt colder than usual. “Yeah, yeah. Maybe I just need some extra snacks to refuel,” he joked, but his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes.
DK noticed it first. Mingyu wasn’t eating as much as usual. The guy who usually had a bottomless pit for a stomach was pushing food around his plate, claiming he wasn’t that hungry. DK frowned, watching Mingyu from across the dining table in the dorm.
“You okay, Gyu?” DK asked quietly, nudging him under the table with his foot.
Mingyu looked up, startled, like he’d been caught in a daze. “Yeah, just tired. You know how it is,” he replied, brushing it off like it was nothing. But DK wasn’t convinced.
A couple of days later, Minghao picked up on it too. During vocal practice, Mingyu’s voice cracked more than usual, and he seemed winded after simple warm-ups. At first, Minghao thought it was just fatigue—until he noticed the slight tremble in Mingyu’s hands when he reached for his water bottle.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” Minghao asked later that night, cornering Mingyu in the hallway.
Mingyu hesitated for a moment before shrugging. “I’m fine. Just a cold or something.” But Minghao’s sharp eyes caught the faint sheen of sweat on Mingyu’s forehead, the kind that didn’t come from physical exertion.
By the end of the week, DK and Minghao were exchanging worried glances whenever Mingyu stumbled through practice, but every time they tried to bring it up to the others, they were met with dismissive chuckles.
“It’s just Mingyu being dramatic,” Seungkwan said with a grin. “You know how he is.”
“He’s probably trying to get out of extra rehearsals,” Woozi added, shaking his head.
Even S.Coups, their leader, waved them off. “He’s fine. We’re all under stress—it’s probably nothing.”
DK and Minghao weren’t so sure.
It was a particularly grueling practice when things came to a head. The choreography was intense, with back-to-back rehearsals pushing everyone to their limits. The room was thick with tension, sweat dripping from every member as they worked tirelessly to perfect each move.
Mingyu was struggling. His limbs felt heavy, his head pounding with every beat of the music. His vision blurred at the edges, but he clenched his jaw, refusing to show weakness. The last thing he wanted was to be seen as a burden.
But his body had other plans.
During the final run-through, Mingyu missed a step, nearly colliding with Wonwoo. Hoshi immediately cut the music.
