The dorm was quiet, the kind of silence that wrapped around the members after a long day of practice. Everyone had gone to bed hours ago, and the dim light of the moon filtered through the windows, casting faint shadows on the walls.
Ni-Ki tossed and turned in his bed, a gnawing discomfort in his stomach keeping him awake. At first, he thought it was just the stress of an upcoming schedule—a little anxiety was normal—but the queasiness steadily grew. By the time the clock on his nightstand blinked 2:47 a.m., the discomfort had turned into full-blown nausea.
He sat up, a hand pressed to his stomach as his mouth filled with a bitter, metallic taste. Panic flared for a moment, but he shoved it down. Maybe it was just something he ate. Dinner had been a little heavier than usual—spicy ramen paired with fried chicken, courtesy of Sunoo’s craving for comfort food.
Swinging his legs over the side of the bed, Ni-Ki tiptoed out of the room. The last thing he wanted was to wake Sunghoon, his roommate. He pushed the door open and stepped into the dark hallway, one hand on the wall to steady himself. The dizziness made his head spin, and he felt his stomach lurch.
The bathroom door clicked shut behind him, and he barely made it to the toilet before his body gave in. He gagged, the sour burn of vomit rising in his throat as he hunched over. Each wave left him more drained, his legs trembling as he gripped the toilet bowl for support.
“Ni-Ki?”
The voice startled him. He turned his head, finding Sunghoon standing in the doorway, his hair messy and his expression a mix of concern and sleepiness.
“What’s going on?” Sunghoon asked, stepping closer. He crouched down beside Ni-Ki, his hand instinctively reaching to support the younger boy’s back.
“Just... something I ate,” Ni-Ki mumbled, his voice hoarse. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, avoiding Sunghoon’s gaze.
Sunghoon frowned. “You look terrible. How long has this been going on?”
“It’s nothing. I’m fine,” Ni-Ki insisted, though his pale face and the sweat beading on his forehead said otherwise.
“Right.” Sunghoon rolled his eyes but didn’t push. Instead, he grabbed a washcloth from the sink, ran it under cold water, and handed it to Ni-Ki. “Here. Clean up.”
Ni-Ki took it gratefully, pressing it to his clammy skin.
“Come on, let’s get you back to bed,” Sunghoon said, standing up and offering his hand.
“I’m fine, hyung,” Ni-Ki repeated, but his legs wobbled as he tried to stand. Sunghoon caught him before he could fall, wrapping an arm around his shoulders.
“You’re not,” Sunghoon said firmly. “And if you don’t stop being stubborn, I’m waking the others.”
Sunghoon helped Ni-Ki back to their shared room, his grip steady as he guided the younger boy toward his bed. Ni-Ki sank into the mattress with a sigh, his pale face a stark contrast to the dark blanket he pulled up to his chest. Sunghoon sat on the edge of the bed, arms crossed as he studied Ni-Ki.
“You need to tell someone if you’re not feeling well,” Sunghoon said after a long pause.
“I’ll be fine,” Ni-Ki mumbled, already turning to face the wall. “It’s not a big deal. I just need sleep.”
Sunghoon sighed but didn’t argue further. “Fine. But if you feel worse, wake me up. Promise?”
“Promise,” Ni-Ki murmured, thoughSunghoon wasn’t convinced.
