The dorms were unusually quiet for a Sunday morning, a rare reprieve for the members of NCT. Scattered across various rooms, some were catching up on much-needed sleep, others were scrolling through their phones, and a few were flipping lazily through TV channels. The soft hum of background noise—the occasional laugh from a video, a pot clinking in the kitchen—gave the dorm an almost tranquil atmosphere.
Jisung sat cross-legged at the dining table, headphones perched over his ears as he sipped on a protein shake. His laptop was open in front of him, though it seemed forgotten as he scrolled through his phone. Over the past few weeks, he'd been fixated on cultivating healthier habits. It was a coping mechanism for the pressures of being an idol—especially as the youngest member in such a massive group. Drinking plenty of water, trying new workouts, and obsessing over meal planning had become his way of asserting control in an otherwise chaotic lifestyle.
Mark ambled into the kitchen, yawning and running a hand through his messy hair. Spotting Jisung, he grabbed an apple from the counter before leaning down to ruffle the younger’s hair.
“Still drinking that stuff?” Mark teased, eyeing the protein shake with mock disdain. “You’re the only person I know who willingly drinks that chalky nonsense.”
Jisung pulled off his headphones, grinning. “It’s not bad once you get used to it. Besides, I need to keep up with all of you. Gotta bulk up!”
Mark chuckled, taking a bite of his apple. “You look fine, dude. Don’t stress about it.”
Jisung shrugged, smiling as he put his headphones back on. But behind the smile was a quiet determination. Mark’s casual comment didn’t reassure him—it only reinforced the need to work harder. He had to look strong, capable. After all, he wasn’t a kid anymore.
Over the next few weeks, subtle changes began to creep in. At first, it was just the way his clothes hung a little looser. Then it was the sharpness of his cheekbones, the way his wrists seemed thinner than usual. It wasn’t obvious at first, but in the spotlight of their busy schedules, the changes became harder to ignore.
Doyoung was the first to notice. During a music video shoot, he caught a glimpse of Jisung’s profile under the harsh studio lights. The boy’s face looked unusually hollow, the bright smile he wore unable to mask the gauntness.
“Have you been eating enough?” Doyoung asked casually during a break, handing him a bottle of water.
“Of course! I eat more than anyone here,” Jisung replied with a laugh, his voice cheerful as ever.
But Doyoung wasn’t convinced. Something about the way Jisung’s smile didn’t quite reach his eyes left him uneasy.
Kun noticed it too. One night, while cooking dinner for the group, he observed Jisung eagerly serve himself seconds—and then thirds. It was almost comical how much he ate, enthusiastically chatting with the others as he polished off his plate. But Kun couldn’t shake the unease. Despite Jisung’s appetite, his frame still looked worryingly thin.
“I think we need to talk to him,” Taeyong murmured later that evening, pulling Kun aside.
Kun hesitated, glancing toward the living room where Jisung was laughing with the other members. “What if it’s nothing? He eats well, and he doesn’t seem tired or sick. Maybe he’s just overworked.”
“Maybe,” Taeyong replied, though his tone betrayed his doubt. “But I’ve seen this before. We need to keep an eye on him.”
The members began to notice it more and more. Johnny and Jaehyun subtly encouraged Jisung to rest during practices, offering him water or suggesting he take a break. But Jisung was as energetic as ever, brushing off their concerns with a smile. Yuta and Ten started sitting with him during meals, hoping to catch any signs of skipped food. Yet Jisung always ate with enthusiasm, even asking for more.
