The midday sun hung high in the sky as the ENHYPEN members gathered on the soccer field, the cool breeze doing little to mask the warmth radiating from the ground. They'd been looking forward to this rare day off for weeks-a chance to blow off steam and enjoy a friendly soccer match together. Jake, ever the soccer enthusiast, had been buzzing with excitement since morning, dragging Jay and Sunghoon into endless strategy discussions about their three-person team.
Sunoo, on the other hand, was less enthusiastic about playing. "I'll referee," he declared, arms crossed and whistle already dangling around his neck. "That way, I don't have to run around, and you all can't cheat."
Jay rolled his eyes with a grin. "Fine, but no playing favorites. Especially with Jake."
Sunoo smirked, already enjoying his self-appointed position of power. "I'm fair. Don't worry."
As the game began, Jake threw himself into it with his usual energy, weaving past Jungwon and Niki as he passed the ball to Sunghoon. Their teamwork was seamless, with Jay calling out plays from behind and Jake shouting encouragement to his teammates.
Halfway through the game, the score was tied. Jake's competitive streak burned bright as he sprinted toward the ball, which was careening dangerously close to the goal Jungwon and Niki were defending. Sunghoon passed it perfectly, and Jake moved to intercept.
That's when it happened.
The grass, slick from an earlier drizzle, betrayed him. As Jake pivoted to kick, his foot slipped out from under him. His ankle twisted unnaturally, and a sharp, searing pain exploded in his heel.
Jake crumpled to the ground with a choked gasp, clutching the back of his leg. The game came to an abrupt halt.
Sunoo, who had been watching closely from the sideline, was the first to react. He dropped his whistle and sprinted toward Jake, his earlier playful demeanor replaced by alarm. "Hyung! Are you okay?" he called out, kneeling beside him.
Jake gritted his teeth, trying to wave him off. "I'm fine. Just-just give me a second."
Jay and Sunghoon were at his side in an instant, their expressions mirroring Sunoo's concern. "You don't look fine," Sunghoon said, his voice tight.
Jake attempted to push himself up, but the moment he put weight on his injured foot, the pain flared again, sharp and unbearable. He collapsed back down, his face pale.
Sunoo placed a hand on Jake's shoulder, his voice steady but firm. "Stop trying to tough it out. You're hurt, and we need to get you to a hospital."
The ride to the hospital was tense. Sunghoon sat in the passenger seat, glancing back every few seconds as Jay drove with a rare seriousness, his usual playful banter nowhere to be found. Sunoo stayed in the backseat with Jake, his hand resting gently on Jake's ankle to keep it stable.
"It's probably just a sprain," Jake murmured, though the tremble in his voice betrayed his words.
"Let the doctor decide," Sunoo replied, his tone leaving no room for argument.
At the hospital, the doctor's diagnosis came quickly: a ruptured Achilles tendon. The words hit Jake like a ton of bricks. Surgery was necessary, followed by months of recovery and rehabilitation.
As the doctor explained the procedure and recovery timeline, Jake's heart sank. The thought of being sidelined for so long, of missing out on performances and practice, was unbearable. He barely registered the reassurances of his members as they left the hospital, his mind consumed by guilt and frustration.
Back at the dorm, Jake retreated to his room, avoiding the others as much as possible. He hated feeling like a burden, and the thought of disrupting their schedules only added to his guilt.
The members tried to cheer him up in their own ways. Heeseung brought him snacks, Jungwon offered to play video games with him, and Sunghoon kept him company with stories about their trainee days. But Jake couldn't shake the feeling that he was letting everyone down.
It was Niki who noticed the subtle shifts in Jake's behavior first. Jake had always been the bright, energetic one, quick to laugh and even quicker to lift others' spirits. But now, he was quieter, more withdrawn.
One evening, Niki found Jake staring blankly at the ceiling, his face illuminated by the dim light of his phone. Without a word, Sunoo sat down beside him.
"You don't have to pretend you're okay," Niki said softly. "It's okay to be upset."
Jake hesitated, his fingers fidgeting with the edge of his blanket. "I just... I hate feeling useless. Everyone's working so hard, and I'm just sitting here."
"You're not useless," Niki replied firmly. "You're injured, Hyung. That's not the same thing. And no one thinks less of you because of it."
Over the following weeks, the members rallied around Jake. Jay and Sunghoon, still feeling guilty for not noticing his discomfort sooner, took it upon themselves to keep him company during his physical therapy sessions. Sunoo was a constant presence, always ready with a reassuring word or a sarcastic quip to lighten the mood.
One particularly difficult day, Jake returned from a therapy session feeling more discouraged than ever. He collapsed onto the couch, burying his face in his hands.
"This sucks," he muttered. "I feel like I'm never going to get better."
Sunghoon sat down beside him, his expression serious. "You will. It's going to take time, but you'll get there. And we'll be with you every step of the way."
Jake looked up, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Promise?"
"Promise," Sunghoon said, clapping him on the shoulder.
As the group prepared for their next comeback, Jake's absence during practices was palpable. But the members refused to let him feel left out. They worked with the choreographer to include a special seated performance for Jake, ensuring he could still participate despite his injury.
When the day of the performance arrived, Jake's nerves were almost overwhelming. But as he took his place on the raised platform, he felt a surge of warmth and gratitude. The cheers of the fans and the supportive smiles of his members reminded him that he wasn't alone.
As the performance ended, Jake caught Sunoo's eye from the sidelines. Sunoo grinned, giving him a thumbs-up. Jake couldn't help but smile back, the weight of his earlier fears lifting just a little.
Jake's recovery wasn't easy, but with the unwavering support of his members, he found the strength to keep moving forward. Through every setback and every small victory, he was reminded that he didn't have to face his struggles alone.
And as he stepped back onto the soccer field months later, Sunoo standing on the sidelines with his whistle in hand, Jake felt a renewed sense of determination.
"Don't push yourself too hard this time," Sunoo called out, his playful tone laced with genuine care.
Jake laughed, the sound filled with newfound confidence. He knew he still had a long way to go, but for the first time in weeks, he truly believed he'd get there.
