The dorm wasn’t quiet, but Haknyeon felt like it was. Laughter echoed from the living room, mingling with the faint hum of a variety show playing on the TV. But to Haknyeon, it felt like he was listening from underwater—muted, distant, unreachable.

He sat at the dining table, half-heartedly scrolling through his phone while his untouched cup of tea cooled beside him. Every now and then, he’d glance toward the living room, watching the other members sprawled across the couches. Kevin and Jacob were arguing over something on the screen, their voices overlapping with Juyeon’s occasional commentary. New was curled up with Sunwoo, both engrossed in their phones, sharing occasional chuckles at inside jokes Haknyeon no longer felt part of.

A week ago, they would’ve been all together. Someone would’ve pulled him over, insisting he join whatever game or conversation was happening. There would’ve been snacks on the table, shared stories about the day, and pointless debates over who left dishes in the sink. But now… now it felt like he was fading out of focus in his own home.

Maybe it’s just me. He tried to reason with himself, but the pit in his stomach only grew heavier. He had been trying to shake off the feeling for days, telling himself it was just exhaustion from their busy schedules. But the more he tried to dismiss it, the clearer it became.

He wasn’t imagining this distance.

Whenever he spoke, his words felt like they skimmed over the surface of conversations, barely making ripples. When he cracked jokes, they were met with polite chuckles instead of the laughter that used to make his chest warm. And when he tried to pull someone aside—just to talk, like they always had before—the moment would slip through his fingers. A distraction. A phone call. Someone else needing attention.

It was like being surrounded by people but feeling utterly alone.

The next day, they had a rare break in their schedules, and Eric suggested they go out together—to shop, play games, and just unwind. Haknyeon felt a flicker of hope spark in his chest. Maybe this will fix things. Maybe all they needed was a day to relax and reconnect.

The van ride to the mall was filled with laughter and teasing. Haknyeon sat quietly by the window, watching the city blur past, waiting for someone to pull him into the conversation. He offered comments here and there, but they seemed to disappear in the noise. Even when Sunwoo accidentally elbowed him while wrestling for space with Q, all he got was a quick, distracted “Sorry, bro,” before Sunwoo turned back to the chaos.

At the mall, things didn’t feel much different. They split into groups without even realizing Haknyeon hadn’t chosen a side. He ended up trailing behind Hyunjae and Younghoon, who were too busy arguing over which game console was better to notice him lingering a step behind.

By the time they regrouped, the sky outside had darkened ominously. Kevin frowned at his phone. “Hey, there’s a storm warning. Maybe we should head back before it gets bad.”

Everyone agreed, the excitement of the day fading as they rushed to pay and gather their things. Haknyeon felt a pang of anxiety tug at him, but he pushed it down. At least we’re going back together.

Before heading to the parking lot, Haknyeon quickly excused himself to the restroom. “I’ll be right back!” he called out, hoping someone would acknowledge him.

But no one did.

When Haknyeon stepped out of the restroom a few minutes later, the hallway was eerily quiet. The group’s usual noise and energy were gone, replaced by the distant echo of rain hitting the mall’s roof.

He quickened his pace, heart pounding. Stepping outside, his stomach dropped.

The van was gone.

At first, he thought maybe they had moved it closer to another exit. He pulled out his phone to call someone—anyone—but his battery was critically low, the red symbol glaring at him like a warning. He dialed Sangyeon first. No answer. Then Eric. Then Juyeon. Voicemail after voicemail.
