The air in the studio buzzed with energy as The Boyz prepared for their English-language interview. It was a big opportunity, one they didn’t take lightly. Cameras were set, microphones adjusted, and the members sat neatly in their seats, each projecting a polished image of professionalism and charm.
As leader, Sangyeon felt the weight of representing the group. It wasn’t just about answering questions—it was about steering the conversation, ensuring everyone had a chance to shine while also making sure their collective image came across as cohesive and genuine.
The interview started smoothly, with the members laughing at the lighthearted banter and taking turns responding to questions. Sangyeon fielded more of the complex ones, speaking in measured, careful English. Though he wasn’t the most fluent, he had worked hard to prepare for this, and it showed in the interviewer’s approving nods.
But about halfway through, Sangyeon began to feel unsteady. The lights overhead seemed brighter than usual, and the air felt stifling despite the studio’s air conditioning. His head throbbed faintly, and a wave of dizziness washed over him.
He blinked a few times, trying to shake off the disorientation. Maybe it’s just the nerves, he thought. But the lightheadedness persisted, and he felt a faint trickle down his nose.
Alarmed, he brushed his fingers across his upper lip, only to find blood. His stomach dropped. Quickly, he tilted his head back slightly, covering his nose with his hand.
Hyunjae, seated beside him, noticed immediately. “Hyung,” he whispered, leaning in. “Are you okay?”
Sangyeon glanced at him, his voice barely audible. “Is it bad?”
Hyunjae’s eyes widened as he nodded. “You’re bleeding a lot.”
The other members caught on, their expressions shifting from relaxed to concerned. The interviewer paused, noticing the commotion.
“I’m so sorry,” Sangyeon said, rising from his seat. “I need a moment.”
He walked off set with a staff member, leaving the others to handle the situation. They picked up where he left off, seamlessly continuing the interview, but their concern for their leader was evident in their occasional glances toward the door.
Sangyeon returned after a few minutes, his nosebleed stopped, and his composure restored. He apologized again to the interviewer and the staff, finishing the session without further incident. The members admired his professionalism but couldn’t shake the worry that something wasn’t right.
Back at the dorm, the atmosphere was lighter. The members teased one another about their interview answers and recounted funny moments from the day. Sangyeon tried to join in, but he still felt off. His limbs felt heavy, and his head pounded faintly, but he didn’t want to ruin the mood.
When dinner preparations began, Sangyeon insisted on helping. He moved to the kitchen, taking up a cutting board and knife to chop vegetables. The activity seemed to distract him from his discomfort, but his movements were slower than usual.
Eric popped in to grab something from the pantry, leaving Sangyeon alone for a moment. That was when it happened.
The dizziness returned, stronger this time, and Sangyeon felt his legs buckle beneath him. His vision blurred, and the last thing he heard was the sound of the knife clattering against the counter and a plate shattering as he fell.
The crash sent the members in the living room rushing to the kitchen. Hyunjae was the first to reach him, dropping to his knees beside Sangyeon’s motionless form.
“Hyung! Hyung, wake up!” Hyunjae’s voice trembled as he shook Sangyeon’s shoulder gently.
Sunwoo and Kevin quickly cleared the broken plate shards while Jacob ran to fetch a damp cloth.
“Is he breathing?” Juyeon asked, his voice tight with worry.
“Yes,” Hyunjae replied, his relief evident. “But he’s out cold.”
Meanwhile, Eric stood frozen in the doorway, his hands trembling. “I-I only left for a second,” he stammered, his voice breaking. “I didn’t know—”
Kevin moved to Eric’s side, placing a firm but gentle hand on his shoulder. “Eric, it’s not your fault. You couldn’t have known.”
Eric shook his head, tears spilling over. “If I hadn’t left, this wouldn’t have happened. I should’ve been there.”
Jacob returned, pressing the damp cloth to Sangyeon’s forehead. “Eric, listen to me,” he said calmly. “This isn’t your fault. Hyung’s been feeling off all day. It was bound to happen.”
Reluctantly, Eric nodded, though the guilt lingered in his eyes.
Hyunjae and Younghoon carefully lifted Sangyeon and carried him to his room, laying him down on the bed. Jacob checked his temperature while Sunwoo fetched water and medicine.
Eric, still shaken, pulled up a chair beside the bed and sat vigil, refusing to leave Sangyeon’s side.
The dorm grew quiet as the night deepened. Most of the members settled in the living room, their concern keeping them from sleeping. In the bedroom, Eric remained at Sangyeon’s side, adjusting the blanket and wiping his hyung’s forehead periodically.
When Sangyeon finally stirred, his eyelids fluttering open, Eric leaned forward anxiously.
“Hyung! You’re awake—thank goodness.”
Sangyeon blinked, his gaze unfocused at first. “Eric?” His voice was raspy, but the familiar warmth was still there.
“Yeah, it’s me,” Eric said, his voice thick with emotion. “You scared us.”
Sangyeon managed a faint smile. “Sorry for worrying you.”
Eric’s lips trembled as he replied. “I should’ve stayed in the kitchen. If I hadn’t left…”
“Eric, stop,” Sangyeon interrupted gently. “This wasn’t your fault. I’ve been feeling off all day. I should’ve said something earlier.”
Eric looked down, tears slipping down his cheeks. “But you’re always the one taking care of us. How can we do the same for you if you don’t tell us when something’s wrong?”
Before Sangyeon could respond, Hyunjae entered the room, carrying a glass of water and some medicine. “Eric’s right,” he said, handing the glass to Sangyeon. “You’re always trying to be the strong one, but you don’t have to do it alone.”
One by one, the other members trickled in. Jacob brought a warm blanket, Sunwoo handed over a heat pack, and Kevin carried a bowl of soup.
Younghoon crouched beside the bed, his expression serious. “Hyung, you need to promise us you’ll speak up next time. We can’t help if we don’t know you’re struggling.”
Sangyeon looked around at the group, his heart swelling with gratitude. “I promise. I’ll do better.”
Eric, who had been silent for a moment, suddenly stood up. “I’ll make sure of it! From now on, I’m sticking to you like glue. No more fainting on my watch.”
The room filled with laughter, breaking the tension.
Sangyeon chuckled softly, his strength slowly returning. “Alright, Eric. I’ll hold you to that.”
As the members settled in around him, the love and camaraderie they shared became even more apparent. For Sangyeon, it was a reminder that he didn’t have to bear the weight of leadership alone. They were a team, a family, and they would always have his back.
