Heeseung had always prided himself on being the reliable pillar of ENHYPEN. The leader had a reputation for his unshakeable resilience, never letting anything stop him, no matter the odds. No matter how exhausted he felt, he would push through. He'd done it countless times, pushing his body and mind beyond their limits for the sake of the group. But tonight was different.
The practice room was dimly lit, the hum of the air conditioning the only sound accompanying the pounding music. Heeseung stood in the center, drenched in sweat, his breath ragged as he tried to keep pace with the rest of the group. Jungwon, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki moved seamlessly around him, but Heeseung's movements were sluggish. His legs burned with every step, his shoulders ached, and his vision began to blur at the edges.
"You good, Heeseung-hyung?" Jungwon's voice broke through his fog, the younger member's brow furrowed in concern as he looked over at him.
Heeseung didn't answer immediately, instead pushing himself harder, as though by ignoring the fatigue, he could erase it altogether. He didn't want to be seen as weak. He couldn't afford to fall behind.
"I'm fine," Heeseung finally replied, his voice tight, but he could barely keep himself steady. "Let's just finish this."
The others exchanged wary glances, but they were too focused on the routine to press him further. They had a performance to prepare for, and Heeseung's perfectionist streak had driven them to this point. Still, as the practice continued, it was clear that something was wrong. His steps became uneven, his once-steady rhythm faltering. Heeseung's mind screamed at him to keep going, but his body was beginning to fail him. He hadn't been sleeping well for weeks, barely eating or drinking enough between practices and schedules. His body had started to send warning signs, but Heeseung stubbornly ignored them.
Finally, after what felt like hours, the practice session ended. Heeseung didn't even bother to celebrate. He stood in the center of the room, breathing heavily, feeling his legs shake beneath him. His body felt like lead, every muscle in his body sore from overexertion. His heart hammered in his chest as he fought the dizziness threatening to pull him under.
"Hyung, are you okay?" Ni-ki asked, noticing Heeseung's instability. He was the youngest, but even he could sense that something was off.
Heeseung tried to force a smile, waving him off. "I'm fine. Just tired. I'll be good once I rest a bit."
But the rest was something Heeseung wouldn't allow himself. He was the leader. He had to set an example. He had to be strong.
Later that night, after a quick shower and a light meal, Heeseung's body finally betrayed him. As he was about to leave the dorm for a quick trip to the convenience store, his legs gave out beneath him. His vision blurred, and his chest tightened. He grabbed the nearest wall for support, but his knees buckled, and he collapsed.
"Hyung!" Sunghoon was the first to reach him, his voice filled with alarm.
Heeseung's vision swam as he tried to sit up, his head spinning. "I'm fine, really. It's just... I'm just tired," he muttered, trying to stand again, but his body refused to cooperate.
"No, you're not fine!" Sunghoon exclaimed. "You've been pushing yourself too hard. We need to get you to the hospital."
The members rushed Heeseung to the hospital, his body still trembling, though he continued to insist that he was okay. The doctor examined him quickly, running tests to determine the cause of his collapse. After a tense silence, the doctor looked at the group with concern.
"Mr Lee is suffering from severe dehydration and muscle strain. His body is in shock from overwork," the doctor explained, his tone professional but firm. "He needs to rest and hydrate properly, or his condition will worsen."
The members stood frozen, stunned by the severity of the diagnosis. But Heeseung, still dazed, didn't seem to grasp the weight of the situation.
"I'm fine, really," Heeseung insisted, despite the sweat beading on his forehead and the weakness in his voice. "I just need a nap, that's all. I'll be okay in a few hours."
Jungwon shook his head, his voice calm but firm. "Hyung, you need to rest. This isn't just exhaustion. You've been pushing yourself too hard for too long. You can't keep going like this."
"I said I'm fine," Heeseung snapped, his irritation rising. He didn't want to hear it. He couldn't let his body fail him now, not when there was so much at stake.
Jay, who had always been the more grounded member, placed a hand on Heeseung's shoulder, his voice soothing yet stern. "Heeseung-hyung, please listen to us. We care about you. Your health is more important than anything else. You can't keep running on empty. You need to rest."
But Heeseung just shook his head stubbornly. "No, I can't. We've got so much coming up. If I rest, if I stop now, I'll fall behind. I can't let you all down."
Sunoo's voice trembled with emotion. "You're not going to fall behind, Hyung. We'll support you, but you have to take care of yourself first. You can't keep pushing this hard. We need you to be healthy."
Heeseung's eyes flickered with frustration, a mix of pride and fear in his gaze. He had always been the strong one, the one who set the pace for the group. The thought of slowing down, of needing help, terrified him.
"Please," Jake added quietly, stepping forward. "We all know how much you've been giving, but it's okay to rest. We're a team. You don't have to carry everything by yourself."
Heeseung stared at them, feeling the weight of their concern wash over him. It felt suffocating. He didn't want to be a burden, didn't want to show weakness. But even as he protested, his body was shaking, and the dizziness was starting to close in again.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice breaking as his pride crumbled under the weight of their care. "I'm scared. I don't know what to do if I stop. I don't want to let you down."
Jungwon stepped forward, gently taking his hand. "You're not letting us down, Heeseung-hyung. You've already done so much. But now you need to take care of yourself. We're all here for you. And that means we'll support you through this, too."
Over the next few days, Heeseung was forced to take time off. The members made sure he stayed hydrated, rested, and received the medical attention he needed. But even then, Heeseung struggled with guilt. Every time he sat still, he felt like he was falling behind. Every moment he wasn't rehearsing felt like wasted time.
"You don't have to push yourself so hard," Sunghoon reminded him gently one evening, sitting by his side as Heeseung leaned against the bed, his eyes staring out the window. "You don't have to do everything. We've got you. You're not alone."
Heeseung let out a heavy sigh, finally allowing himself to rest, to accept the love and care his members had been offering him. It felt alien to him, this notion of slowing down. But little by little, Heeseung began to understand.
It wasn't just about him. It was about the group. He was part of something bigger than himself. And sometimes, that meant taking a step back to heal, to be whole. His health was more important than his pride.
Several weeks later, Heeseung was back on his feet, his energy returning, his body healing. He had learned to balance his responsibilities with self-care, a lesson that was hard-won but invaluable.
During their next performance, Heeseung moved with renewed strength and confidence. As he stood backstage, ready to go on, he found his members gathered around him, offering him their smiles.
"You're ready, Hyung," Sunoo said, a grin on his face.
Heeseung smiled back, his heart lighter than it had been in weeks. "Yeah, I am. And this time, I know it's okay to take a break when I need to."
The members nodded in agreement, their unwavering support a testament to their bond. Together, they would always find a way to carry each other, no matter the obstacles.
