The practice room was filled with the rhythm of their latest track, the booming bassline reverberating through the floor as the members of Xikers poured their energy into perfecting every move. Yechan, as always, was giving it his all. Being the maknae didn't mean he could slack off—if anything, he pushed himself harder, determined to prove his worth among his talented hyungs.
The choreography was intense, the kind that left sweat dripping and muscles burning, but Yechan reveled in the challenge. As they rehearsed the climax of the routine—a sharp spin into a low drop—his sneaker slid against a slick patch on the polished floor. Time seemed to slow as he lost his footing.
He hit the floor hard, his jaw taking the brunt of the fall with a sickening crack.
The music cut abruptly as everyone turned to him. Yechan pushed himself up quickly, one hand cradling his jaw. The pain was sharp and immediate, radiating through his cheek and into his head, but he forced a grin.
"I'm fine!" he insisted, waving them off before anyone could get too close. "Really, it's nothing. Let's keep going."
Minjae, the leader, crouched beside him, his expression serious. "Yechan, are you sure? That looked bad."
"It's just a bump!" Yechan lied, forcing his voice to sound steady. "Come on, let's not waste time."
Reluctantly, the group resumed practice, but Yujun's eyes lingered on Yechan. He noticed the way Yechan kept pressing his fingers to his jaw when he thought no one was looking, the slight wince whenever he spoke or laughed. Something wasn't right.
Yechan stared at his swollen reflection in the mirror the morning after the fall, dread pooling in his stomach. His left cheek had ballooned overnight, the angry redness stark against his pale skin. Even the slightest movement—raising his eyebrows, twitching his lips—sent sharp, searing pain shooting through his jaw.
He tried opening his mouth, just slightly, to test if he could eat. As soon as his teeth parted, a blinding ache radiated through his face, making him gasp and clutch his cheek. It wasn't just pain—it was a relentless, stabbing pressure that made every attempt at movement feel like his bones were grinding against shards of glass.
At breakfast, he struggled to join the conversation. Each syllable felt like dragging sandpaper against an open wound. The act of speaking—normally effortless—required him to move his jaw in ways that only deepened the ache.
When he tried to contribute, his words came out muffled and clipped, his lips barely parting. The effort sent tears stinging his eyes, though he blinked them away before anyone could notice.
"Yechan, you're so quiet today," Junmin commented.
Yechan managed a weak laugh, but it felt more like a grimace. "Just tired," he lied, wincing at the sharp pull in his jaw with each word.
Yujun, sitting beside him, tilted his head. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah," Yechan replied quickly, keeping his answers as short as possible. Even a single word was too much, the pain spreading to his temples and making his head pound.
By lunch, Yechan's stomach growled angrily, a reminder of how little he'd eaten since the injury. He eyed the spread before him—steamed rice, grilled fish, and kimchi—but the mere thought of chewing made his jaw throb in protest.
Picking up a spoon, he tried to scoop up some rice. He took a cautious bite, but as soon as his teeth pressed together, the pain shot through him like an electric current. He dropped the spoon, clutching his cheek as tears welled up.
He hurriedly wiped his eyes, hoping no one saw. But Yujun, ever observant, leaned over. "You didn't eat much yesterday either," he said softly. "Are you sure you're okay?"
