Seeun had always been the voice of the group. His powerful vocals were a defining characteristic of their sound, and he prided himself on his ability to captivate audiences with every note he sang. His passion for music ran deep, and he poured his heart into every performance, every practice session. He couldn't imagine a life without singing, without the stage, without his group.
But it was during a particularly gruelling stretch of rehearsals and performances that things began to change. The schedule had been demanding—long hours of practice, followed by back-to-back shows, interviews, and fan events. Seeun had been pushing himself harder than usual, determined to meet the group's high expectations. But the strain on his vocal cords was beginning to take its toll.
At first, he ignored the small signs. A slight rasp in his voice after an intense practice. A little tightness in his throat. He chalked it up to fatigue, telling himself it would pass. But when the symptoms persisted, and the tightness worsened, Seeun knew something was wrong. His voice felt strained, as if it wasn't responding the way it used to. And then, one fateful morning, during a rehearsal for an upcoming performance, he tried to hit a high note—and nothing came out.
His throat felt dry, and the words caught in his throat, as if his voice had disappeared entirely. Panic surged in his chest. He tried again, but it was no use. No sound. Just a hollow, painful ache.
The members were quick to notice, of course. Minjae, who had always been attuned to Seeun's moods, immediately looked up from his own practice when he saw Seeun stop mid-song. The worried expression on his face mirrored that of the others, who had paused their work to watch.
"Seeun?" Minjae asked, his voice gentle but filled with concern. "Are you okay?"
Seeun forced a smile, trying to downplay it. "I'm fine," he said, but his voice was barely a whisper. "Just a little tired, I think."
But the others weren't convinced. Junmin, his eyes narrowing in concern, crossed the room to stand next to him. "You've been pushing yourself too hard, haven't you?" he asked, his tone more serious now. "You need to take care of yourself."
Seeun opened his mouth to respond, but the words wouldn't come. Instead, he cleared his throat, hoping the tightness would go away. But it didn't. And when he tried to speak again, all that came out was a barely audible rasp.
That was when they knew. Something was seriously wrong.
The doctor's office was sterile and quiet, a far cry from the energy Seeun was used to. He sat anxiously, fidgeting in his seat as the doctor examined his throat. His stomach churned with nerves, the weight of uncertainty pressing down on him.
When the doctor finally spoke, it wasn't the news Seeun had hoped for.
"You've developed vocal cord nodules," the doctor explained, her voice calm but firm. "They're benign growths on your vocal cords, and they're preventing your vocal cords from vibrating properly, which is why you're experiencing difficulty speaking and singing."
Seeun's heart sank. Vocal cord nodules. He had heard of them before—singers and performers often developed them after excessive strain, but he never imagined it would happen to him. The doctor continued to explain the condition, but Seeun barely heard her. All he could focus on was the idea of not being able to sing, not being able to speak freely, not being able to do the one thing he loved most in the world.
"You'll need to remain silent for at least a few weeks," the doctor advised. "No speaking, no singing. It's crucial that you allow your vocal cords to heal. If you continue to strain them, it could lead to permanent damage."
Silent. For weeks.
The thought of it felt suffocating. How was he supposed to go on without his voice? How could he contribute to the group if he couldn't speak, couldn't sing?
