The practice room was warm despite the late autumn chill outside. Sweat dripped down Sakuya's forehead as he moved to the beat of the music, his sneakers squeaking faintly against the polished wood floor. NCT Wish's rehearsal had stretched into its fourth hour, and though the other members seemed focused and sharp, Sakuya felt like he was moving through molasses.
His limbs felt heavy, his movements lacked their usual precision, and his breathing came short and shallow. He clenched his fists, trying to stop the faint tremble in his hands. His mind buzzed with an unrelenting static of anxious thoughts.
What if I embarrass myself in front of them? What if they think I don't belong?
The upcoming dinner with the senior members of NCT was all Sakuya could think about. He had admired idols like Taeyong, Yuta, and Mark for years—idols who had shaped his dream of becoming one himself. The thought of meeting them in person, of standing beside them as an equal, felt like an impossible weight.
A misstep brought him crashing back to reality.
"Sakuya!" Yushi's voice was sharp as Sakuya stumbled, his foot catching on the edge of the mirrored wall. Yushi grabbed his arm, steadying him before he fell. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Sakuya said quickly, avoiding his hyung's concerned gaze.
"You don't look fine," Yushi countered, his brow furrowing. "You're pale, and you've been off all day. What's going on?"
"Nothing. I just slipped," Sakuya muttered, pulling away and bending to rub his ankle.
"Let's take it from the top," Sion, the group's leader, called out, clearly sensing the tension but choosing to focus on moving forward.
The group reset their positions, and the music started again, loud and commanding. But Sakuya couldn't shake the tremble in his hands or the queasy feeling in his stomach. As they hit the climax of the choreography, his timing was off again, his arms faltering mid-move. This time, his foot slipped entirely, sending him sprawling onto the floor.
"Alright, that's it," Sion said, clapping his hands. "Sakuya, sit out for a minute. The rest of you, take five."
The other members didn't argue. As they scattered to grab water and towels, Sion crouched next to Sakuya, his expression serious but not unkind.
"You're not yourself today," he said gently. "What's going on?"
Sakuya shook his head, his throat tight. "It's nothing. I'm just tired."
"It's not nothing," Riku said as he walked over, handing Sakuya a bottle of water. "You've been off all week. You barely eat, you've been quieter than usual, and now this? Talk to us."
The other members gathered around, forming a small circle on the floor. Jaehee plopped down cross-legged with a teasing grin. "Let me guess—you're nervous about meeting the seniors, huh?"
Sakuya's head shot up, his wide eyes confirming the truth.
"It's normal to be nervous," Ryo said, leaning back on his hands. "We're meeting all of them—Taeyong, Ten, Mark, everyone. It's a lot."
"It's not just nerves," Sakuya admitted, his voice small. "I've looked up to them my whole life. They're the reason I wanted to be an idol. What if they think I don't belong? What if I embarrass myself—or worse, all of you?"
The room fell silent as his words hung in the air.
Jaehee broke the tension with a dramatic sigh. "Oh, please. You think you're the only one who's ever tripped during choreography? I'm pretty sure Doyoung hyung told me he once fell flat on his face during a live stage."
