The morning started with an unusual heaviness. Johnny dragged himself out of bed, his body drenched in sweat and his head pounding. Every joint felt like it was weighted down, and his throat burned with each breath. He glanced at his reflection in the mirror. His usually vibrant expression was replaced by pale, clammy skin and glassy eyes.
He shuffled into the living room where Mark and Taeyong were discussing the day’s schedule.
“Johnny-hyung, are you okay?” Doyoung asked immediately, setting his coffee cup down. “You don’t look good.”
“I don’t feel good,” Johnny admitted, his voice raspy. “I think I have a fever.”
“You need to stay home,” Taeyong said firmly, already pulling out his phone to inform their manager. “We’ll handle the variety show without you.”
Johnny nodded in agreement. Despite his dedication, he knew his limits. But just as Taeyong finished explaining the situation to their manager, his expression darkened.
“What do you mean he has to come?” Taeyong asked, his voice sharp, his free hand curling into a fist. “He’s sick.”
Johnny leaned against the couch, closing his eyes as Taeyong argued. Eventually, Taeyong’s face twisted in anger as he hung up.
“They said you’re too important to miss the shoot,” Taeyong said, his tone clipped and cold.
Doyoung’s jaw tightened. “This is ridiculous.”
Taeyong’s anger flared. “They don’t care about anything but the damn schedule. Johnny, you shouldn’t go. I’ll fight them on this.”
But Johnny, sensing the futility of the situation, shook his head weakly. “It’s fine,” he said, though the thought of enduring a long day filled him with dread. “I’ll just push through.”
“You shouldn’t have to,” Taeyong replied, his voice shaking with barely restrained fury. But Johnny was already heading to his room to get ready.
The variety show set was buzzing with energy as all 25 members of NCT arrived. Johnny, usually one of the most energetic, lagged behind the group, his movements sluggish and his head spinning.
“Hyung, are you okay?” Renjun asked, noticing how pale Johnny looked.
“I’m fine,” Johnny replied with a forced smile. He ruffled Renjun’s hair. “Don’t worry about me.”
But Renjun couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling in his chest.
The first segment involved a high-energy relay race. As the members cheered and strategized, Johnny stood quietly at the edge, swaying slightly. Jaemin nudged Chenle and whispered, “Hyung doesn’t look good.”
“Maybe we should say something,” Chenle replied, glancing at Jisung, who was also watching Johnny nervously.
Before they could act, the race began. Johnny stumbled through his part, his legs trembling with each step. When he passed the baton to Xiaojun, he nearly collapsed but caught himself just in time.
“Hyung, sit down,” Xiaojun urged as soon as his turn was over.
“I’m fine,” Johnny insisted, but his shaky hands betrayed him.
Jeno, sitting nearby, clenched his fists. “Hyung isn’t fine. Why isn’t anyone stopping this?”
The younger members exchanged uneasy glances, their anxiety growing as they watched Johnny struggle.
During a break between segments, Johnny leaned against the wall, his breaths shallow and his vision swimming. He felt as though the world was spinning, and no amount of blinking could make it stop.
