Kyungmin sat on the edge of the couch in the green room, his legs bouncing nervously as he flipped through the schedule for the day's variety show filming. The energy in the room was buzzing; his groupmates Shinyu, Dohoon, Youngjae, Hanjin, and Jihoon were joking around, teasing each other about the upcoming challenges. It was their first big variety show as a group, and everyone wanted to leave a lasting impression.
A staff member entered the room, clipboard in hand. "Alright, everyone, here's how today's shoot will work. We've got a relay race segment that requires some physical activity—obstacle courses, water balloons, and the like."
The group exchanged excited glances, except for Kyungmin, who swallowed hard. Physical challenges weren't his strong suit. He preferred dancing, singing, or even trivia games, but he didn't want to be the one to voice hesitation. The pressure to perform well was already high, and he didn't want to seem like he wasn't giving it his all.
"Sounds fun!" Shinyu exclaimed, punching the air.
"Piece of cake," Dohoon added, cracking his knuckles.
Kyungmin forced a smile and nodded. "Yeah, let's do it."
The relay race turned out to be more grueling than Kyungmin had anticipated. The course was filled with slippery platforms, rope climbing, and even a round where they had to carry weighted sandbags. The producers had emphasized the importance of making the segment lively, encouraging the idols to go all out for the sake of entertainment.
As the filming began, the group threw themselves into the challenge, laughing and cheering each other on despite the physical demands. Kyungmin, however, was struggling to keep up. By the time his turn came, he was already winded.
"You got this, Kyungmin!" Jihoon shouted from the sidelines.
Determined not to let his group down, Kyungmin sprinted toward the first obstacle: a slippery balance beam. He made it halfway across when his foot slipped. He flailed for balance, his heart pounding, but it was too late—he fell sideways, landing hard on his arm.
The air left his lungs in a sharp gasp. Pain shot through his elbow as he hit the platform below.
"Cut!" the director called, rushing over along with a few staff members.
Kyungmin sat up, clutching his arm. His groupmates surrounded him immediately, their laughter replaced with concern.
"Are you okay?" Hanjin asked, crouching beside him.
Kyungmin nodded quickly, his face pale. "I'm fine. It's nothing."
But the grimace on his face told a different story.
The staff insisted Kyungmin take a break to be checked out by the on-site medic. A light sprain, the medic had said, wrapping his arm and advising him to rest. Though he wasn't seriously injured, Kyungmin's stomach churned with guilt. The filming schedule was delayed because of him, and the producers had to adjust the segment to account for his absence.
"Don't worry about it," Shinyu said as they returned to the green room. "Stuff like this happens all the time."
"Yeah," Youngjae added. "It's not a big deal."
Kyungmin forced another smile, but the knot in his chest only tightened. They were just saying that to make him feel better. The delay wasn't minor—it was on him. He had caused the entire crew, the producers, and his group unnecessary stress.
As the day went on, Kyungmin withdrew. He avoided eye contact with the staff and his members, keeping his responses short and his demeanor subdued. He laughed when the cameras were rolling, but the moment they stopped, his smile faded.
