Jisung sighed as he dropped his controller onto the coffee table, the plastic clattering in the silent dorm. The only light in the room was the dim glow of the television, casting shadows across the walls. The rest of the members had already gone to bed, their soft snores barely audible from their rooms. Despite the stillness, Jisung couldn't sleep.
His mind wouldn't let him rest. Instead, he'd turned to video games, hoping the distraction would calm his overthinking brain. It hadn't worked. His eyes burned from staring at the screen for hours, his body aching from sitting in the same position.
Just as he reached for the controller again, a voice broke through the silence.
It was Mark, speaking in English, his tone muffled by the walls but still distinguishable.
Jisung paused, leaning back on the couch. Curious, he tilted his head toward the hallway, trying to make out the words.
Mark's voice grew clearer as he approached. He was mid-conversation, pacing back and forth. At first, Jisung didn't think much of it. Mark often called his family or friends late at night, his fluent English a soothing background noise. But this time, something about the conversation made Jisung's heart sink.
"Yeah, he was so careless," Mark said, his frustration evident.
Jisung froze.
"Trying to do everything by himself, and then it just blows up in his face," Mark continued.
Was he talking about Jisung?
Jisung's chest tightened as his mind raced. What had he done wrong? He sifted through his memory, replaying the past week in his head. Had he made a mistake during rehearsal? Missed a step in their choreography? Failed to hit a note during recording?
"He's always like that," Mark said, his voice softer but still tinged with exasperation. "I don't know how many times I've told him he doesn't have to do it all alone. It's like he doesn't trust us enough to help."
The words felt like a knife to Jisung's chest.
Was that how Mark saw him? Someone who didn't trust his team? Someone careless and unreliable?
Jisung couldn't listen anymore. He sank further into the couch, his breath shallow, his vision blurring as he blinked back tears.
He didn't hear the rest of Mark's conversation. He didn't notice when the older member returned to his room. All Jisung could hear were those words echoing in his mind.
The next morning, Jisung dragged himself to practice, his body heavy with exhaustion. He hadn't slept at all, his mind consumed by doubts.
Mark's words replayed in his head every time he looked at him.
He avoided Mark as much as he could. When they rehearsed, Jisung stayed at the back of the group, keeping his distance. He barely spoke during breaks, choosing to sit by himself with his headphones on, even if no music was playing.
But it wasn't just Mark he avoided. He started withdrawing from all the members.
Renjun was the first to notice. "Jisung, are you okay? You've been really quiet lately," he asked during a water break.
"I'm fine," Jisung replied quickly, brushing him off. He took a long sip from his water bottle, pretending not to notice Renjun's worried expression.
But Jisung wasn't fine. He was exhausted. His insomnia worsened, the sleepless nights turning into a string of days where his body felt like it was running on empty. His appetite dwindled, and even when the other members urged him to eat, he could barely stomach a few bites.
