The day had been grueling, to say the least. Hours of practice and a packed schedule had left all seven members of ENHYPEN physically and mentally drained. Back at the dorm, Sunoo was recovering from a stomach bug, and Jungwon, ever the attentive leader, had texted him several times throughout the day to check in.
“Hyung says he’s feeling a little better,” Jungwon shared with Ni-ki as they climbed into the second van. The two were paired together for the ride home while the others—Heeseung, Jay, Jake, and Sunghoon—had already left in the first van, eager to grab snacks along the way.
Ni-ki gave a small nod, exhaustion evident in his posture as he popped in his headphones and leaned back against the seat. Jungwon, seated beside him, glanced at the rearview mirror and caught the driver’s eyes. “Let’s get home quickly,” he murmured, already picturing Sunoo waiting for them at the dorm.
The streets were quiet as their van rolled through the city, neon lights casting fragmented colors over the wet pavement. A light drizzle earlier that evening had left the roads glistening, giving the surroundings an almost dreamlike quality. Inside the van, Jungwon sat quietly beside Ni-ki, who was scrolling aimlessly through his phone. Their schedules had been packed lately, and the exhaustion hung in the air like a heavy blanket, though neither of them complained.
Jungwon’s phone buzzed in his lap, the faint vibration breaking the stillness. He glanced down to see a message from Heeseung in the other van.
> “We’re stopping at a convenience store. Want anything? Don’t ask for too much; Jake will probably eat it all before you get it.”
A small smile tugged at the corners of Jungwon’s lips. Even after such a long day, Heeseung still found ways to lift their spirits. He began typing a reply.
> “Ni-ki says he wants chips, and I’m trusting you to bring me something decent—”
He paused mid-typing as the van slowed to approach an intersection. His attention flickered momentarily to the rain-speckled windows before returning to his phone.
The screech of tires ripped through the air, sharp and violent, shattering the tranquil atmosphere.
Jungwon’s head snapped up, his phone slipping from his grasp and landing on the floor. Blinding headlights suddenly filled his vision, barreling toward them from the left side. The oncoming car was moving impossibly fast, its driver having ignored the red light.
“Ni-ki!” Jungwon’s voice was sharp, almost instinctive, as his protective instincts kicked in. He reached across the seat toward the maknae.
Everything seemed to happen in slow motion.
The crash came with a deafening roar—metal crunching and twisting as the other car collided with the passenger side of their van. The force of the impact was immense, shaking the entire vehicle. Jungwon barely had time to throw himself over Ni-ki, shielding the younger boy with his body as the van lurched violently to the side.
The air filled with the sound of shattering glass as windows exploded inward, scattering shards like rain. The van spun out of control, the tires screeching against the slick pavement as it skidded. Jungwon held tightly onto Ni-ki, his arm braced around the younger boy’s head as they were both tossed against the side of the vehicle.
The chaos was disorienting—flashes of bright light, the metallic groan of the van’s frame twisting under pressure, and the sharp sting of broken glass cutting into exposed skin. Jungwon’s heart pounded in his chest, the adrenaline surging through his veins.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the van came to a jarring halt. The silence that followed was almost suffocating, broken only by the faint hiss of steam escaping from the crumpled engine.
