Heuning Kai sat by the window in the dimly lit dorm room, staring blankly out at the city below. The lights flickered in the distance, but he felt far removed from the world outside. He could hear the muffled sounds of laughter and chatter from the other rooms, his members bustling about, yet a heavy sense of isolation settled over him.
His room felt emptier than usual tonight. It wasn't that he didn't have people around him; far from it. His fellow members of TXT were always nearby, part of his daily life, his family away from home. But tonight, the weight of their presence felt like an invisible barrier. They all had their own lives, their own worries, their own ways of coping. Kai, on the other hand, had always been the one expected to shine brightly, to bring energy and smiles to the group, to the fans, to the world. He was the bright, optimistic soul—at least, that was how he was seen. But deep down, Heuning Kai didn't feel that way anymore.
The constant need to keep up the facade of joy, to be the upbeat, ever-smiling member, had worn him down. Every day was a performance, every interaction a carefully crafted moment. Behind the camera, he was constantly putting on a mask, hiding the storm that had been brewing within him for months. The pressure of maintaining that perfect image, of always being the "good" Heuning Kai, was suffocating.
He had tried to brush it off at first. Everyone had their moments of feeling low, right? But this was different. Every time he tried to rest, every time he tried to relax, the feelings of loneliness and inadequacy would flood in, overwhelming him. He had no one to talk to. His members were busy, always occupied with their own schedules. The fans would never understand if he let them see the cracks in his smile. The world expected him to be perfect, and if he let his guard down for just a second, he feared that everything he had worked so hard for would come crumbling down.
Tonight was no different. His members were all in their respective rooms, winding down after a long day of practice. Kai had tried to join them, but the words felt stuck in his throat. How could he tell them he wasn't okay when everyone else seemed to have it all together? So, he retreated to his room, the silence pressing down on him like a heavy weight.
Kai sank to his bed, his hands trembling slightly as they brushed through his hair. He shut his eyes, but the overwhelming sense of loneliness refused to leave. The tears welled up in his eyes, blurring his vision. He had spent so many nights like this—alone in the dark, pretending to be fine, pretending that everything was okay. But tonight, the facade cracked. The dam broke, and the tears fell freely, spilling down his cheeks.
He sobbed quietly, the weight of everything crashing down on him. The pressure, the expectations, the loneliness. He didn't know how to fix it. He didn't know how to make it stop. The idea of being misunderstood, of being a disappointment, consumed him. He wasn't allowed to be sad. He wasn't allowed to feel empty. He had to be strong, happy, perfect. But tonight, he couldn't keep it up anymore.
As the tears continued to flow, Kai curled up on his bed, clutching his pillow tightly to his chest. His sobs filled the room, but no one came. The thought of them hearing him, of them seeing his vulnerability, made him feel even more ashamed. He didn't want anyone to see how broken he felt.
The next morning, Heuning Kai dragged himself out of bed, wiping the remnants of tears from his face. His eyes were red and puffy, his head pounding from the emotional toll of the night before. He couldn't remember the last time he had gotten a good night's sleep. He forced himself to get ready, to put on the smile he had practiced so many times before. But this time, it felt different. The smile was tight, strained, and unconvincing.
As he walked into the living room where his members were gathered for breakfast, the energy was palpable. They were laughing and joking, their usual high spirits filling the space. But for Kai, it all felt distant, like he was watching from the outside. The sound of their laughter seemed to echo around him, but it didn't reach him. His heart felt heavy, like it was being pulled down by something invisible.
"Hey, Kai! You're late today," Yeonjun said with a grin, nudging him playfully as he sat down beside him. "Didn't sleep well last night?"
Kai's smile wavered, but he quickly covered it up. "Yeah, just... a little tired," he muttered, shoveling a forkful of food into his mouth to avoid further questions. His mind was elsewhere, lost in the overwhelming weight that had taken root in his chest.
The conversation continued around him, but Kai could barely focus on it. His thoughts were spinning, and every time someone spoke to him, he felt like he was sinking deeper into the isolation he had been feeling for so long. He was surrounded by people, yet he felt like no one truly saw him. No one knew how he was really feeling. They were all so focused on their own lives, on their own concerns, and Kai couldn't blame them. He had always been the one who put on the brave face, who made everyone laugh, who kept the mood light. Now, he didn't know how to ask for help.
As the morning wore on, Kai found himself retreating to his room, unable to shake the feeling of being out of place. He wanted to be happy, wanted to fit in with everyone else, but the weight of his emotions felt like it was too much to bear. He closed the door behind him and collapsed onto his bed, burying his face in his pillow. The tears came again, this time more quietly, as if he couldn't bear to let anyone hear him.
It was only a few minutes later when he heard a soft knock at the door. At first, Kai didn't respond. He wasn't ready to face anyone, especially not now. But then the door creaked open slowly, and he looked up to see Soobin standing in the doorway, his face filled with concern.
"Heuning," Soobin said gently, his voice soft. "Are you okay?"
Kai's heart sank. He had hoped to avoid this, to keep his pain hidden for just a little longer. But Soobin wasn't going to let him get away with it. He stepped inside, his eyes scanning Kai's tear-streaked face.
"You've been distant lately," Soobin continued, sitting down on the edge of the bed. "We've all noticed. You don't have to pretend like everything is fine. If you're struggling, you can talk to us."
Kai bit his lip, his chest tight. He didn't want to admit it. He didn't want to face the truth of how much he was hurting. But something in Soobin's eyes, the genuine care and concern, made the words slip out before he could stop them.
"I don't know what's wrong with me," Kai whispered, his voice barely audible. "I feel... so alone. And I'm scared. I'm scared that if I show anyone how broken I really am, they'll stop loving me. I'm not good enough. I don't know how to keep going."
Soobin's face softened, his hand reaching out to gently rest on Kai's shoulder. "Heuning," he said quietly, "You're not alone. You never have been. You don't have to carry all of this on your own. We're here for you. You don't have to be perfect. We love you just the way you are."
Kai's breath hitched, and he felt the tears begin to fall once more. This time, he didn't try to hide them. Soobin pulled him into a gentle hug, his arms enveloping Kai in warmth and comfort.
"We're all here for you," Soobin whispered. "You don't have to keep everything inside anymore. You don't have to be strong all the time. We'll carry you when you need it. You don't have to face the darkness alone."
The words wrapped around Kai like a lifeline, pulling him out of the isolation he had trapped himself in. And in that moment, surrounded by the warmth of his member's embrace, he realized that he wasn't alone. The fear, the loneliness, the pain—it didn't have to be something he faced in silence anymore.
Soobin stayed with him for a while, just talking to him softly, letting him vent, letting him open up in a way he hadn't allowed himself to before. Soon, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, and Taehyun joined them, all of them offering their support, their understanding. One by one, they reassured Kai that they were there for him, that they loved him no matter what.
They didn't expect him to be perfect. They didn't need him to keep up the facade of always being happy and upbeat. They loved him for who he was, flaws and all. And in their presence, Kai began to let go of the weight he had been carrying for so long.
It wasn't an overnight change. There were still days when the loneliness crept back in, when the pressure felt too much to bear. But now, Kai knew that he didn't have to face those days alone. His members were there for him—always. And that, more than anything, made him feel less alone.
As the group rallied around him, supporting him through the difficult moments, Kai began to learn that it was okay to not be okay. He didn't have to be perfect to be loved. And with each passing day, he grew stronger, not because he was invincible, but because he knew that he didn't have to face the darkness alone.
