The flu season that year was relentless, sweeping through the country and leaving countless people bedridden. For GOT7, it was more than just a bad season—it was an unrelenting storm of illnesses that didn’t just arrive but seemed to settle in with a vengeance. It started innocuously enough: a few sneezes here, a mild cough there. But within days, the dorm was plunged into chaos as one by one, Jinyoung’s six brothers fell victim to a variety of ailments.
The first to go were JayB and Youngjae. Jinyoung had noticed their voices growing raspy during practice, their usual vibrant energy dampened by fatigue. By the time they returned to the dorm that night, their coughing had become incessant. JayB, ever the leader, tried to push through, but it was clear that he was struggling. Youngjae, on the other hand, barely made it to his bed before collapsing in a heap, his face flushed and his breathing labored.
Jinyoung stayed up that night, listening as the sound of their coughing filled the dorm like an unrelenting metronome. Each fit seemed to shake the walls, echoing through the quiet. By morning, both were diagnosed with bronchitis. The doctor’s orders were clear: rest, hydration, and a strict regimen of medication.
But the illnesses didn’t stop there. Just as Jinyoung was settling into a routine of caring for the two vocalists, Jackson started to complain of body aches and chills. At first, he brushed it off, claiming it was just fatigue from their packed schedule. However, when Jinyoung found him shivering on the couch, bundled in a blanket with a thermometer reading over 39°C (102°F), it was clear he wasn’t just tired—he was sick.
The usually boisterous Jackson, who could fill any room with his laughter and larger-than-life personality, was now reduced to a shadow of himself. His face was pale, his eyes glassy, and his voice barely a whisper. He spent most of his time curled up on the couch, surrounded by a fortress of tissues and empty water bottles, his groans of discomfort a constant background noise.
Then it was Mark’s turn. It started with a vague complaint of nausea, which quickly escalated into something much worse. By the end of the day, he was camped out near the bathroom, unable to keep anything down. Jinyoung found himself kneeling beside him, rubbing his back as he retched into the toilet.
“Sorry, Jinyoung,” Mark mumbled weakly, his face pale and sweaty.
“Don’t apologize,” Jinyoung said firmly, fetching a damp cloth to wipe Mark’s face. “Just focus on getting better.”
Jinyoung barely had time to catch his breath before the maknaes—BamBam and Yugyeom—developed chickenpox. He didn’t even know how they got it at their age.. At first, it was just a few red spots on their arms, but within 24 hours, they were covered from head to toe. The two youngest members were itchy, miserable, and cranky, their usual playful banter replaced with groans of discomfort.
“Hyung, it itches so bad!” BamBam whined, scratching furiously at his arms despite Jinyoung’s protests.
“Stop scratching, or you’ll scar,” Jinyoung said, pulling BamBam’s hands away gently but firmly.
“But I can’t help it!” BamBam shot back, his voice tinged with frustration.
Yugyeom, slumped in his bed, chimed in weakly. “Hyung, can’t we just... scratch a little?”
Jinyoung sighed, exhaustion creeping into his voice. “No. I’ll get the cream. Stay put.”
It was like managing a small hospital. JayB and Youngjae needed constant hydration and soothing for their coughing fits. Jackson required tissues, fever reducers, and comforting words. Mark needed his back rubbed and sips of electrolyte drinks to keep him from dehydrating. Meanwhile, the maknaes were a full-time job on their own, with Jinyoung applying cream to their spots and ensuring they didn’t scratch themselves raw.
