The cold wind bit at their faces as &TEAM stepped out of the van, bundled in thick jackets and scarves. Red and orange leaves danced in the air, settling lightly on their hair and shoulders as the crew greeted them with wide smiles and rolling cameras. The autumn-themed obstacle course sprawled out before them, a chaotic labyrinth of balance beams, rope swings, and inflatable contraptions suspended above cold water.
Laughter filled the air as the members took in the scene, their breath forming little clouds as they joked about who would be the first to slip and fall.
“Better be careful, Taki,” Fuma teased, nudging the younger with a grin. “If you fall in, you might turn into an ice cube!”
“I’m not the one you should worry about!” Taki shot back, puffing out his chest with mock bravado. He pointed a gloved finger at K. “K-hyung looks like he’s already frozen!”
All eyes turned to K, who forced a laugh, tugging his scarf higher to shield his flushed cheeks. “I’m fine! Just... conserving my energy,” he said, his tone lighthearted but tight.
The teasing continued, but K’s heart wasn’t in it. The sight of the icy water made his stomach churn. It wasn’t the cold he feared—it was what it could do to him.
K had been diagnosed with Cold Urticaria years ago, a rare condition that caused hives, swelling, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis when his skin was exposed to cold temperatures. It wasn’t something he’d ever told the members. How could he? It sounded ridiculous. An allergy to cold water? To him, it felt like a weakness he couldn’t afford to admit.
As the eldest, K took pride in being someone the others could depend on. He couldn’t let something as trivial as this undermine his image. Besides, he thought bitterly, what could anyone do? They couldn’t stop the shoot for him, and he didn’t want to risk ruining the team’s fun.
“Alright, everyone!” the director called, clapping his hands together. “First up: the balance beam challenge! Let’s see who can cross without falling in!”
The members cheered as the staff led them to the starting platform. K hung back slightly, masking his unease with a carefully practiced smile.
“Don’t think you can escape me!” Nicholas teased, wrapping an arm around K’s shoulders as they walked.
“Wouldn’t dream of it,” K replied, his voice steady despite the tight knot of dread building in his chest.
The first challenge was a chaotic mix of balance beams, swinging ropes, and tilting platforms. The goal was to cross to the other side without falling into the freezing lake below. The members, competitive as ever, immediately began strategizing—or, in Taki and Maki’s case, plotting how to shove each other into the water.
When K’s turn came, he stepped onto the beam with practiced confidence, careful to keep his movements slow and deliberate. The icy wind bit at his exposed skin, but he forced himself to ignore it.
“K-hyung! Watch out!” Nicholas yelled from behind, lunging toward him with playful intent.
K dodged instinctively, his heart racing as his foot slipped on the beam. He caught himself just in time, gripping the safety rail tightly. “Nice try!” he called back, masking his panic with a laugh.
The other members cheered and hollered, completely unaware of the storm brewing inside him.
The games continued, each one more chaotic and water-soaked than the last. K managed to avoid direct contact with the freezing pool, but the effort left him tense and exhausted. His nerves were fraying by the time they reached the final challenge of the morning: the Water Walking Inflatable Balls.
