ALEX
She's changed. Every time I see her it seems as if more and more things about her are different, her hair, her clothes, her family.. her life. It feels like we don't fit together like we used to.
I take my time making us some chicken and potatoes in the kitchen, making sure to season them well, I couldn't help but pick up a few pointers from some of the chefs I hire for my parties, Jan was my favorite.
I knew she would be there saturday and I was actually looking forward to it. The party is supposed to be one of the biggest, and most expensive parties I have ever organized. Three personal chefs, a local band and a dj, embroidered table cloths and over 300 hundred guests.
I had too much to focus on with all of that than to worry of my relationship with Kate. She has been my best friend for years and after going through so much I...
"God fucking damnit" I hear from the other room.
I walk through the "formal" dining room to see Phil almost throw his phone in the marble floors below him.
"What is going on?" I ask him still holding a bottle of barbeque sauce and a fork.
"Everything!" He yells his voice bouncing from wall to wall around us.
Even he jumps a little surprised by the loud reverberations.
"Have you read the news today?" He asks me seemingly frustrated.
I noticed that he was sweaty and worn down.
"No I uh haven't why?" I ask him.
"While on fucking live tv one of my now ex-employees was a bigot, asshole, dumbass, sexist just horrible.. Tomorrow I have to talk to several other media outlets abiut the incident and apologize for their behavior."
He said now walking back towards the kitchen.
He takes the milk carton off of the counter and takes a big swig from it then proceeds to wipe his face clean witb the back of his sleeve.
"Is there anything...?" I ask trying to be polite even though I know their isn't much I could do to help.
"No I just need to go relax, if Kate asks I will be out back." He says grabbing the entire half full carton and walking through the back door.
Is he what Kate has always wanted? Is this the man that is good enough for my best friend?
I tried to wipe the thought away and focus on the food in front of me. I plated two plates and was about to enter the nursery with hers when I heard Nora start crying again. I opened the door a crack to see her walking back and forth from one wall to the other with Nora leaning against her right shoulder.
I brought her plate back to the kitchen and sat alone on one of the bar stools. I picked at my food for nearly 15 minutes before I realized I wasn't hungry.
It was as if my body was on autopilot, before I knew it I was driving and I wasn't headed home.
