While Maple sat pouting in her room and trying to find a way to get her Mama to listen and not tan her hide, Mama Woods for the time being let her brother into the house...
While Uncle Jeffy rummaged through his sister's near empty pantry and fridge, Mama Woods did quite the opposite. Trying to find aide for her rumbling stomach, she went to her cupboards. Not for food, but for some kind of temporary relief.
Now there was something in Jeffy's eyes that made Mama Woods uneasy. She knew that her and her daughter's life in that instant, would no longer ever be the same. But she didn't know exactly why at the moment. Still, for the time being, she tried her darnedest to remain calm. But she desperately needed to know what truly was going on.
While Uncle Jeffy finally found and nibbled at the last of the coffee cake sitting in the back of the fridge, a very frustrated, Mama Woods, sat down with her brother at the kitchen table. Reluctantly she took out two tablets and plopped them into her glass of water...
"Jeffy...." Mama Woods said looking at her brother just eating away.... "that cake there, is ova a week old. It's cold. It is meant to be hot and ate with coffee."
"Tastes fine to me." He said biting into it.
"Well I'm just sure Fred will be just delighted hear that! And that you ate the last of his Mumma's dessert she made him. And just for him." She groaned.
"Hmm." Uncle Jeffy uttered not phased. "I sure appreciate Fred's mama right now." He said with his mouth stuffed.
Mama Woods, rolled her eyes.
"Well, while you and my newfound rebellious daughter, have been having a hay day__ doing Lawd knows Whut... lollygaggin all hours of the day, I have been tryin to cova for you both. Do you know how hard it is trying to tell a white lie to Reverend and Mrs. Mosay? And on a Sunday of all days..."
"Well I'm sure the good Lawd, for just this once, will forgive the perfect Scarlet."
"I'm serious Jeffery!" Mama Woods scolded!
"Uh oh! It's Jeffery, today is it? You only call me that when you are seriously fit to be tied!"
"You darn right I am!" Mama Woods fussed even more. "And I have every right to be! You know I had to cross all my fingers and toes! And say to all that asked that, 'Oh glory alive! My little apple dumplin Maple, is just down beat, home under the weatha! And my sweet baby brotha? Well... he stayed home to care for my precious love, just so I could hear the Lawd's words!'
"Really?" Uncle Jeffy intriguingly smirked.
"And my ears are still burnin from a vyin Cornelia Pumpkin Lee! Worse... being a mediator and referee between her and Georgia Pine. Whut they see in you, I don't know."
"I don't know eitha." Jeffy agreed.
"I had to convince them both not onlay to try and not come here to care for my, not so ill child! But not to come and feed you both in the process! And do Lawd knows what else! Sides, You ain't ate Georgia's potato salad. Poison!" Mama Woods cringed at the thought.
"Ha!" Jeffy laughed amused. "If I could be a fly on the pie, watchin you lie!"
"It ain't funnay Jeffy! It ain't funny all!" Mama Woods fussed.
