Brooke:
Zöe spun around, her face pale and stricken. “That was Charlie.” Her voice shook with emotion. “That was MY Charlie.” She turned to run, but Damien lunged after her and grabbed her arm. She shot him a furious look, trying to pull her wrist free from his grasp. “That's him.” She snapped. “There's no doubt about it. We need to go up there.” She pointed with her un-trapped arm toward a hill only a couple hundred metres away. “He must be beyond that hill. That's where they're keeping him.” She tugged away from Damien but he held on tighter.
“Zöe.” He said calmly. “This could be a trap. This could- no, scrap that. This WILL be seriously dangerous. We need to think about it before we charge in.”
I nodded in agreement, recovering from my initial shock. “He's right. We need to do this logically.”
Zöe looked reluctant, but she let Damien take her hand, and slowly, quietly lead her towards the hill. We all followed in a similar sly manner. Katie came to walk next to me, shooting me a worried glance. She linked her hand through mine and held on tightly, I squeezed her hand back, feeling comforted by her presence.
No one said anything as we approached the hill. The screams still piercing through the air. As we were ascending it I noticed that Zöe and Damien had their weapons gripped in their spare hands. I took out my own dagger, and relaxed slightly at the familiar cold touch of metal. Until then, I hadn't realised that I'd been so tensed up.
We reached the peak. And found ourselves looking out over a low, wide clearing.
Planted in the middle was a small cave. It didn't look like much, but something about it sent a shiver down my spine.
And then I realised what it was. Charlie's screams were echoing from that very cave.
Zöe set her jaw and gripped riptide. “Okay. So we're going to sneak down there, hopefully unnoticed. And then we're going to charge the cave and recuse Charlie. We'll all get out safe and alive... Ready?” She looked at each of us in turn, and when her eyes fell on me. I gave her what I hope was a brave smile. She nodded in approval, and turned.
Together, we descended the hill.
