Danny:

I collapsed to my knees, panting hard. Charlie was still sleeping in my arms, the little guy didn't even have an ounce of meat on him, but after walking all of that way, he'd gotten pretty heavy.

Katie was next to me, her arm wrapped tightly around Brooke's waist. They fell to the ground together, and Katie quickly wrapped her arms around her twin. Sobbing. Either from tiredness or heartache. Probably both.

I wanted to sit in silence forever at the borders of Camp Halfblood. I didn't want to ever move again. Everything inside of me ached. Especially my head. I wanted nothing more in that moment to be dead. It should've been me in the cave. Not Zöe or Damien. Me.

There was shouting. And then people were running towards us. The first person to reach us was Leo Valdez. He dropped to his daughter's side, panicking. But when Katie assured him that the blood on Brooke's shirt was dry, and that the wound was healed, he relaxed and pulled them into a tight embrace.

Then Percy Jackson was there. Taking Charlie from me. His face was wet with tears, he looked pale and unwell, the pregnant Annabeth must've been waiting in the infirmary, unable to make it out here.

He held his son to his chest and sobbed, Bianca was at his side, holding his shirt sleeve. He looked into my eyes, a question held in his. I shook my head, a tear trickled down my face. Percy gasped and sobbed, then fell to his knees. “Zöe,” he whispered, shaking his head. “My little Zöe.”

Piper and Jason were making their way across the grass. Leo left his children and ran to them. He spoke in a low voice, one filled with sympathy and sadness. And then I could hear Piper screaming, and Jason shouting in rage, swearing at the Gods above. They pulled each other into a hug, sobbing.

So much heartache. So much sadness.

It should have been me.

Why wasn't it me?

It should have been me.
