Zöe:

Charlie's eyelids fluttered weakly, opening for only a moment before falling shut again. I was glad that he wasn't completely conscious; he was probably already permanently scarred from all that he'd been through recently.

The ropes around his wrists and ankles were tied into tight, tangled nots. I worked at them with my bony little fingers; tugging on the rope until my skin began to blisterand my nails started to bleed at the edges.

Damien and Danny weren't having any luck either.

I shot a glance over my shoulder. The door was closing at a slow pace, not even a quarter of the way shut yet. But I didn't exactly have time to waste.

Reluctantly, I took a dagger that I'd picked up from one of the fallen mortals and set it to the rope. My hand shook violently as I held it, I tried desperately to calm myself, but couldn't. “Here,” Damien whispered, a gentle hand on my shoulder. “Let me.” He took the knife from my hand and very carefully cut the first rope. It fell away and dropped at his feet, with a steady hand, he went to the next one.

I nodded, relaxing. We'd have plenty of time to get out.

I moved a step forward, still crouched down. But as I moved, somehow, impossibly, a metal chain shot out from the ground. It had a large, heavy clasp that wrapped around my ankle. Pulling me over and backwards.

I screamed reflexively, my hand going to my trapped leg. The clasp was like a hand cuff, and as I struggled to free myself, it only tightened, squeezing my ankle so hard that the skin around it began to darken in colour.

Damien dropped the knife in shock, it landed inches from my head.

I tried to move towards him. But then another metal chain shot from the ground, and grabbed my other leg.

Damien and Danny both shouted in alarm, and reached out to grab my wrists as I was pulled violently along the ground.

I grabbed the nearest thing to me, a large jagged rock. With all the strength I could muster, I slammed it against the metal, attempting to at least weaken the links.

Nothing.

I was trapped.
