Danny:
My day started normal.
I was at the mall with my brother, and we'd split up for a little while. I went to get a coffee, and that's when I saw her. Zöe. She caught my eye instantly, and it was like I was pulled towards her. She wasn't my usual type, sure she was cute. But she was a bit of a tomboy, and she was small and skinny and fierce. With dark hair, bright eyes and an endearing smile.
I knew she was different, it was just something about her. Like she wasn't... human, in a way.
But I hadn't anticipated that half an hour later, I'd be cowering under a table while Zöe and her snappy friend battled a bunch of... Monsters.
They moved in complete synchronicity. Like two halves of the same person. Zöe would watch Damien's back and he would do the same. They had such skill, swiping and ducking and stabbing and rolling. It amazed me, it wasn't like anything I'd ever seen before.
After what felt like forever the sound of shrieking, hissing and clawing died down. And all was left was the sound of Zöe and Damien's heavy breathing.
Zöe ducked under the table and stared at me.
“Come on, we need to get out of here.” She spoke gently, like she was talking to a little kid, which made me feel embarrassed and useless.
But then I replayed her words in my head, I blinked amazed, were they taking me with them?
I guess I was wasting time, because Damien gently prised Zöe out of the way, before grabbing my arm and hauling me to my feet. “Oh come ON, mortal.” He sighed, before leaning in close. “You're lucky we're not leaving you here. They'll be more coming soon. You're gonna follow us, so you better be quiet and keep out of trouble.” He leant in even closer, so I could feel the heat of his breath. “And if you try to hit on Zöe, you'll be dead.” In any other situation I'd be mad at a guy, threatening me like this. But Damien was different, he wasn't just being cocky and rude.
He was in love with Zöe, though she didn't know, and even I respected that.
