Damien:

Danny was silently crying. Small tears dripping down his face. “First Selena, now you's two....” He shook his head, bowing it as the tears began to fall from his face and onto the stone floor.

“Danny.” Zöe whispered, her voice shaking. “I'm sorry.” She looked at her nephew lying limply on the floor, then back at our friend. “Please.”

Danny nodded once, slowly, biting down on his lip. He turned and picked up Charlie in his arms easily, as if the little boy weighed nothing.

He then looked back at us. “I've never had friends like you guys. I don't care if I've only known you a month. You're the best friends I've ever had.” I think that was the point where I realised that me and Zöe weren't getting out of here. Where I realised that this really was the end. “I love you guys.” Danny croaked, tears streaming down his face now. “And when I'm seventy, and my grand children want to know about my life, about my best friends, my greatest adventures. I will tell them about you.” I looked at Danny through blurred vision and in that moment I remembered a different time, just a few weeks ago. When the two of us had fought over Zöe. We both loved and wanted her. But she chose me. She chose me. Danny had hated me for it. And now here he was. Telling me that he loved me.

How times had changed.

The chains holding Zöe down started to drag us across the floor. I dug my heels into the ground to try to stop us from being pulled any further.

The door was almost three quarters of the way shut. And Danny noticed this.

He looked at us for a good few seconds, the most heart breaking kind of sadness glittering in his eyes.

And then he saluted, like a solider, and ran off, with Charlie in his arms.
